COLEMAN COUNTY CHRONICLE
CHS’ Cagers Win Column
Mounts To “10” Vs. Cisco
By Stan Brudney
After a month has passed during
the current cage campaign, it is
shaping up much like the prior
season in District 11-AA. The boys
battle appears to be between Ran-
ger and Coleman...the girls search
for the gold seems to match Cole-
man and Baird. Of course, it is much
too early to tell and the teams from
Albany will have something to say
about the outcome.
A hint of the above analogy
occurred Tuesday night as 11-AA
teams did “do" battle. The Bluecats
crushed the Loboes in Cisco, 78-39
to make it 2-0 in district play and
10-1 overall. The Katts set the tone
by pummeling the Lady Loboes in
the early contest, 69-32 to make it
3-0 and 10-2 in the records depart-
ment.
Ranger was on the road at
Eastland to continue their rival
series while Baird’s boys and girls
motored to Winters. The results...
Ranger’s boys, led by James Casey’s
24 markers and Craig Koch’s 21
(remember him from last year?),
popped Eastland, 72-48, making it
2-0 in 11-AA and 9-2 overall....Yes,
Anthony Lopez did graduate last
season for the Bulldogs! In the
meantime, Ranger’s girls gave
notice to the rest of the district by
decisioning Eastland, 51-46 to make
it 2-1 in district and 6-6 for the
campaign.
At Winters, there was a surprise.,
at least, from this corner, when the
Bears tripped the Blizzards, 62-46 to
even their record at 1-1 while
Winters fell to 0-2. Baird's gals won
their third straight in district by
breezing 68-48 to make it 8-3 for the
season.
Last year, Jack Baucom's Cats
had their hands full with the Ranger
Bulldogs, losing their only district
game at home, 56-55 in overtime
(CHS finished 13-1) and then easing
past Ranger on the road, 40-38.
Cox's Katts had less difficulty with
Baird in '84-85, whipping them 59 46
on the road and 66-49 at home. They
were 14-0 last season and their
sternest test came from Albany on
the road....a 47-41 victory in over-
time.
Albany swept two games from
Jim Ned Tuesday night...the boys
winning 69 40 and the girls chalking
up a 49-27 victory. Albany’s boys
are 2-0 and the girls are 2-1. Jim
Ned’s boys are 0-2 and the girls are
0-3.
The Bluecats handled Cisco with
ease Tuesday night as four players
“again” reached double figures. The
"dynamic duo”, Speedy Holloway
and Michael Childress, led the
charge with 11-1-23 and 9-3-21
points, respectively while Jayton-
transfer Shane Branch and David
May tallied 6-0-12 and 4-4-12 mark-
ers each. David Edwards and Kerry
Baker had four each and David
Tyson added two free throws to the
attack.
Bryant Brown, Ernest Stewart
and Doug Busby saw hardwood
duty in the rout.
Holloway and Childress scored 13
points each in the first half, leading
the Cats to an overwhelming 40-17
advantage after 16 minutes of play.
Baucom's Cats solved the free throw
line for a six-for six effort during
that span while Cisco’s only bright
spot was their free throw shooting-
nine for 12.
The Bluecats had so many differ-
ent combinations seeting duty Tues-
day night that it could have been
called an all-star game.
The Katts steamrolled to a 69-32
win as Melissa Boyland, Lorrie
Warrick, and Risa Willard keyed
the onslaught. Boyland had 19,
Warrick 18 and Willard 14 (long
range types) as CHS notched their
10th win of the year. Cristy Iaen-
hower bagged nine points, Kim
Wright had six, Lindra Tisdale two,
and Gloria Seballos one to conclude
the scoring.
The Katts JV squad took the
evening’s opener, 42-26.
Three tournaments are on the
immediate horizon for Coleman
teams....the boys and girls junior
varsity teams will participate in the
Rough Creek Class ‘A’ Invitational
meet in Novice (today through
Saturday)...the Katts varsity squad
will play in the Lady Lions Invita-
tional at Brownwood High School on
Friday and Saturday...the Bluecats
will play in the prestigious Brown-
wood Bluebonnet Classic at the
Coliseum on Dec. 27-28.
At the Rough Creek tourney,
Coleman's JV squad will meet
Early’s JV team at 6:30 p.m.
tonight. The winner draws a second
round bye and then meets the
winner of the Rising Star-Jim
Ned Novice games on Saturday at
12:30 p.m. The championship con
test is slated for 9:30 p.m. in the
boys division. Schools at Rough
Creek are Cross Plains, Blackwell,
Mullin, Roby, Trent, Rising Star,
Jim Ned, Novice, Coleman JV, and
Early JV. Bracketing for the Cole-
man JV girls was not available at
press time.
Barbara Cox’s Blue Katts will
meet Bangs’ gals on Fridaf'ak 5:00
p.m. at Brownwood High School. If
victorious, they would advance to
meet Brownwood on Saturday at
12:30 p.m. BHS drew a first round
bye. The third place game is slated
for 5:30 on Saturday...the title
contest is 7:00 p.m. later in the
evening. If the Katts should lose
their opener, they would play at
9:30 Saturday morning with the
consolation contest scheduled for
4:00 p.m., Saturday. Teams in the
field include Brownwood, Coleman,
Bangs, Wylie, Belton and West-
wood.
The Bluecats will make their
annual trek to the Coliseum next
Friday, December 27th to meet the
Early Longhorns at 6:00 p.m. in
their opening round game of the
Bluebonnet Classic. At the moment,
CHS is in the bracket where “Bye
meets Bye” so if they defeat Early,
they would automatically defeat
"Bye”....in simpler language, there
is no opponent for the Cats in the
second round in what has to be the
weirdest positioning in some time.
Trying to make it clearer, in
Division II, Eastland meets San
Saba at 2:30, Thursday, Dec. 26th;
Brady plays Bangs at 4:00 on
Thursday.....Coleman plays Early at
6:00 on Friday and there is "no"
other game in their bracket thus far
for Friday. The title game is slated
for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. At the
present time, Baucom’s Cats would
need only a victory over Early to
reach the finals.
In Division I, the same set of
circumstances exist for Seminole
and Brownwood, who play each
other on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The
winner has no opponent for the
following round at the present time.
From the High School, comes the
following “info" from a Cat assistant
....Jack Baucom is trying to secure a
game with Seminole during the
tourney as both Coleman and Semi-
nole will have plenty of time off
after their opening encounters. The
game, if secured, would be played in
the CHS Gym. Seminole is the only
team to defeat the Cats this year.
Other games in Division I include:
Wylie vs. Waco, 5:30, Thursday....
Andrews vs. Vernon, 7:00, Thurs
day...and of course, Brownwood vs.
Seminole, 7:30 on Friday.
In the continuing saga of CHS
basketball, I will forward any in
formation concerning the Blue
bonnet Classic in Monday’s DV....if
anything changes by then.
Kittens Open
11-AA Play
Vs. Jim Ned
The Coleman Junior High Blue-
kittens opened their 1985-86 Dist-
rict 11-AA cage season Monday
night in Graves Gym against visit-
ing Jim Ned. The Kittens yon three
of the four tilts played.
The 7th grade girls of Howard
Childress grabbed a 15-8 win as six
players dented the scoring column.
Denise Davis and Nicole Malmstrom
tallied four points each while Tera
Alexander tallied three and Kathy
Burroughs two. Kim Jameson and
Jennifer Rudolph had one point
each.
The following contest pitting the
seventh grade boys versus Jim Ned
featured a thrill-a moment finish as
the contest was decided in overtime.
With one second left in the game,
the young Braves were shooting a
1-1 with a point lead at 11-10. The
lob was missed, the Kittens re
bounded, and Howard York was
fouled in the process. Time had
elapsed on the clock but York had a
one-and one to test his nerves at the
other end of the court.
The tall 7th grader pushed aside
the tremendous crowd noise and
made the front end of the 1-1,
hitting net all the way. His second
attempt was wide left and the game
had been deadlocked at 11-11 in
miracle fashion...much to the delight
of the screaming hometown fans and
student body.
In overtime, center Michael
Bramlet connected on a 10 foot shot
in the lane for deciding bucket as
the Kittens overhauled Ned 13-11.
Bramlet’s tally came with 1:15 left
in the two minute overtime period.
York scored 8 and Bramlet 7 to lead
the Kittens.
The Coleman 8th grade girls ran
into a good Ned squad and were
defeated, 26 14. Robyn Daves tallied
six markers for the Kittens while
Kirn Jeffreys and Michelle Edington
netted three each. Paula Roberson
added two to the cause.
The 8th grade boys, led by Eric
Tharp's 14 points and Freddie
Denbow’s 12, pasted Jim Ned, 39-17
in the nightcap.
Keary Jefferson poured in eight
points, Todd Brown and Jeff Ham
monds had two each and Hunter
Hobbs added a point to the winning
production.
All Junior High basketball will be
put on hold as the holidays ap-
proach. Next action will be the
Albany and Brady tourneys on
January 4th.
