Howdy!
By Dick Reavls
Schools arc the easiest sub-
ject in the world to write about
Everyone knows something, or
. a lot, about school*.
Schools come In many sires;
from the still-active one room
rural school to giant univer-
sities. cities within themselves.
Education, as a term. Is the
largest In our language.
It is a complex system that
stretches from the elementary
• room, home ground of the "3
R’s" to the colossus of. say,
. California University, where
atom-smashing Is a growing
subject,
You and I inevitably become
a part of It; and your children
and my children. So many of
us that wc are. as a nation, the
world's best educated iicople.
The public schools have grown
In those large functional liulld-
'tngs with tlie antiseptic and
chalk flavor. In a way to bring
back where It belongs the term
"education"
There it means. simply.
learning to live with each other.
In a way of living that Is democ-
racy. That Is the Job of the
public schools, and there It Is
admirably done.
.Frofessiona) educators who for
jdiars have regarded •'educa-
tion" as the seeking of a college
degree, or degrees, are them-
selves taking a good second look
at the secondary achools. where
mass education has become a
vital weapon In meeting the
Ideological challenges of today
The secondary schools arc
neither preliminary workouts,
nor educational Itomogrnlxen
They are the bnme-ltke. semi-
tec hnle*l systems that take your
child and mine and extend the
teaching that we hav*i;SUrted,
and will eonUmup
Secondin'* education is a Joint
project of parent and teacher,
In which both are sincerely con-
cerned. When their project ends,
Wherever that may be along the
public school course, their stu-
dent becomes a cillten. with
responsibilities that will be per-
formed with the tools they have
given him
Whatever hr may do In hi*
own course the Influence of
those hlgh-celilngvd rooms is a
part of him. You know tills, and
I know this, and, belatedly, the
' educators who have concerned
Ihemselvc with upper-level
curriculum- know it.
Next week is Public school*
Week in Coleman County. This
la a long way to go In saying
that tt t> important that you
have a partnership meeting on
your child's education, that is
m much of his life You’ll enjoy
it. and at vchool you can still
learn.
