Plant Peptide May
Have Many Uses
Los Alamos National Laboratory
has discovered a substance in plants
that could lead to new methods of
isolating metals and growing more
nutritious crops.
Scientist have found a naturally
occurring compound similar to pro-
tein that helps pollution-resistant
plants protect themselves against
GOilMAN COUNTY CHRONICLE
poisoning by toxic metals.
The compound, called a peptide,
binds with cadmium, locking onto
the toxic metal through a complex
series of molecular moves.
The unnamed peptide might be
used to scavenge metals from con-
taminated soil, sewage sludge and
effluent.
