An antique chair and a
picture of S.O. Callahan
were presented to the Jack
County Museum recently by
Doris Green White in mem-
ory of her twin sister, Dorcas
Green Cole. Doris and Dor-
cas are daughters of Marga-
ret Nell Stewart Green.
Doris is the great-grand-
daughter of S.O. Callahan.
The chair is approximately
90 years old. The needle
point design was made by
Mrs. Pearl Callahan Ste-
wart, his daughter.
Fire Chief S.O. Callahan
was a pioneer who helped to
develop Jack County's civili-
zation and industries for
more than fifty years. He
came to Jacksboro by stage-
coach in 1878, the year in
which the soldiers at Ft.
Richardson were mustered
out of service and trans-
ferred to other frontier pro-
tective posts.
He was a charter member
of the Jacksboro Cornet
Band which contributed
much in the earlier days to
the music of this county.
His favorite athletic sport
was baseball.
Mr. Callahan was always
keenly interested in the
youth of the land and kept
closely in touch with their
lives, interests and activi-
ties. This led him into the
Volunteer Fire Department
in which he served as chief
for a record term, said to
have been longer than
served by any other fire chief
of Texas at the time of his
death. It is said that it was
through his leadership that
the local department grew in
efficiency until its record
became known over the
state. It was in that service
that he acquired the name of
"Chief.
