DPS Ask Motorists to Drive
With Core Labor Day Weekend
fMIHINOW!
Over a hundred years ago an
event took place that few recog-
nized for how remarkable it was.
Today we can see the results of one
man’s vision to deal with social
problems using God and humanity
as his guide.
Then: In 1865 a Methodist minis-
ter named William Booth left his
church to preach instead as an in-
dependent evangelist in the slums
of London’s East End. His converts
were many but they often didn’t
feel comfortable in churches. Booth
set up Christian Mission Centers.
In 1878 Booth adopted the name
The Salvation Army for his organi-
zation. Missions became known as
corps; members were soldiers;
ministers were officers; and Booth
called himself the General. This
different kind of Army was fur-
nished with uniforms, a flag, brass
band and martial music. It met in
tents, theaters, dance halls and
outdoors. Despite persecution by
church people because of its uncon-
ventionality, the Army successfully
attacked hunger, homelessness,
and poverty.
Now: The Salvation Army in the
United States has 10,000 centers,
staffed by 5,000 officers and 26,000
employees. This branch of the
Christian church is motivated by
love of God and a practical concern
for the needs of humanity. This is
expressed by a spiritual ministry,
the purpose of which are to preach
the gospel, disseminate Christian
truths, supply basic human neces-
sities, provide personal counseling,
and undertake the spiritual and
moral regeneration of all persons
in need, regardless of race, color,
creed, sex or age.
Anyone can become a member of
The Salvation Army by following a
few basic tenets: believe in Christ,
accept the doctrines of the Army,
and agree to actively support the
Army’s principles and work.
With Labor Day coming on
Monday this allows most
people to have a three day
weekend. Major V.J.
Cawthon, Regional Com-
mander of the Texas
Department of Public Safety
in Lubbock said, "This will be
extremely dangerous time for
motorist since we do have a
three day weekend. This is
the last weekend of the
summertime vacations and
activities."
Major Cawthon also stated,
"Most people will be out to
have a good time just before
school starts and some of
these people will get carried
away and have too much to
drink. The drinking driver
can be seen around recrea-
tional areas such as lakes and
camp grounds." Cawthon
urges all drivers to be alert for
the drunk driver and to report
all infractions of the law to
your area law enforcement
agency.
The Texas Department of
Public Safety will have all
available troopers working
around the clock to make
operation motorcide a safer
time for all who will be using
the highways. These troopers
will be especially on the
lookout for the drinkii|r\
driver, the speeding drh|! ,)
and the reckless driver, since
these are the three main
causes of fatal accidents.
Major Cawthon said,
"Remember to protect
yourself and your family by
buckling up everytime-all the
time. Observe the speed limit,
and if you drink don't drive
and if you drive don't drink."
