This column of questions and
answers on federal tax matters
is provided by the local of-
fice of the U.S. Internal Re-
blished as a public service to
taxpayers. The column an-
swers questions most fre-
quently asked by taxpayers.
Q— Do you have anything
that shows the filing deadlines
for the taxes a small business-
man has to pay?
A— Yes, IRS has a Tax Ca-
lendar and Check List for 1969.
For a free copy send a post
card to your District Office
and ask for Publication 509.
Q— My son won a savings
bond as the best English stu-
dent in his graduating class.
Would the value of the bond
be taxable income to him?
A— Whether the prize is tax-
able or not depends on the cir-
cumstances under which it was
won. If your son had to per-
form a specific act to win the
the prize, such as write an
essay or develop an experi-
ment, the prize would be tax-
able.
A prize given in recognition
of past accomplishments in re-
ligious, charitable, scientific,
artistic, educational, literary
or civic fields is not taxable if
the recipient is selected with-
out action on his part and is
not expected to render future
services as a condition of re-
ceiving the award.
