MANAGING PONDS
FOR MORE FISH
Most farm ponds in Texas are
producing fish far below their
potential because they are not
managed properly, says a
fisheries specialist for the
Texas Agricultural Extension
Service. Texas has about
one-half million acres of small
farm ponds, and these can
produce up to a thousand
pounds of fish per acre annually
under proper management.
Channel or blue catfish offer
the best potential. It lieu of a
commercial ration, fertilizer
should be applied in the spring
at the rate of 100 to 150 pounds
per acre to help produce food
for the fish. Control of aquatic
weeds is also important.
