COLEMAN DEMOCRATIZE
Lajet Was LaGreat
Written by Brett Autry
BeiUr late than never I guess.
I’m a week late writing this article
and several years late attending the
great golf tournament to the north.
Late though I may be, I sing the

praises of our sister city to the
north's new pro golfing event.
I didn’t make it for the shootout
Tuesday or the Pro-Am Wednes-
day, but I made it for the first day of
the real tournament, Thursday. I
went directly to the tournament
office to get my press badge and
after several minutes of toe tapping
and finger thumping I was told that
the badges would be a few minutes
coming and that I should go out and
watch the play for a couple of
minutes to pass the time. I saunter-
ed down the nearest path to where
some people had gathered and to my
surprise walked right upon four of
the top golfers of the world practic-
ing on a putting green. I turned to
Molly with eyes wide and exclaim-
ed, “Hey, that’s Tom Watson! Yeah,
and that’s Hale Irwin over there,
and the guy in the white pullover
sweater is Fred Couples, the longest
hitter in the game. See that guy in
the dark blue sweater? ... that’s
Lanny Wadkins!!*! can't believe
it... the first pro tournament I've
ever been to and the first guys I see
are the world’s best. That would be
compared to going to your first pro
football game and seeing Johnny
Unitas, Jim Brown, Bronco Nugur-
ski and Red Grange all on one team.
As I said, it was some time before
I got my press badge, and I was
beginning to think maybe I wasn’t
going to receive one because I’m
only from a small town newspaper.
The people at LaJet were to prove
me totally wrong however, they not
only gave me my badges, but also
gave me a parking pass that let me
park for free, a nice tour of the
clubhouse, and a royal treatment by
a Mr. Sheffield.
Thursday seemed to be the per-
fect time to be at LaJet because the
weather was cool, but not cold .. .
the crowds were not too large, but
enough to block the wind off my
back ... and all the golfers were
still there. I got to see a whole
passel (?) of name golfers hack away
at the ball. I walked several holes
before I came to my senses and
settled down at one hole to watch all
the golfers pass. I finally decided to
sit behind #16 green to watch. As
some of you may know, #16 has been
rated by the PGA as one of the top
20 Hardest Holes in America by the
touring pros. After I had settled
into my seat in the bleachers, I
noticed a familiar figure sitting on
the edge of the green holding up a
“Quiet” sign. Sho’ nuff it was Harold
Skelton, who had volunteered to be
a marshall for this four-day event. It
turned out that I saw a whole bunch
of Coleman folk at the tourney ...
they were mostly following the big
name players around.
I wanted to go back Saturday but
it was real cold and wet. I wanted to
go back Sunday but that was MY
golf day ... so I had to settle for
just the one day of watching my
heroes. I fully intend to go back next
year to get an even more detailed
account (both editorial and pictoral)
of the event. This tournament is fun
and would be worth your while to
attend. Coleman seems to be send-
ing a growing list to LaJet every
year and I can see why ... it's just
plain enjoyable.
Curtis Strange is $63,000 happier,
Mark O’Meara is $32,000 happier
and the Rehab Center is much,
much better off thanks to the LaJet

POOR WAGER
All evidence to the contrary, why
do so many motorists wager a few
seconds saved running a stoplight
against the rest of their lives7
Obviously, the faults of other
people are often so glaring they
blind us to our own.
Classic. Thank you LaJet for an
enjoyable time and for your contri-
bution to our area . . . Coleman’s
