Rep. Finnell Opposes Federal
Gasoline Tax Proposal
Rep. Charles Finnell of
Holliday says two congres-
sional proposals to raise the
federal gasoline tax by as
much as 50 cents a gallon
would derail the state's econ-
omy and penalize Texas con-
sumers, who drive longer
distances than most Ameri-
cans.
Finnell, an appointee to
the Interstate Oil Compact
Commission, said an in-
crease of 50 cents in the tax -
even in 10 cent increments
proposed in one bill - could
cost Texas billions of dollars.
"Lower gas sales would
trigger refinery cutbacks
and layoffs," he said. "But
the greatest damage would
be to Texas business and
agriculture in drastically
higher transportation cost."
Finnell said the gas-tax
increase would hurt all con-
sumers by driving up the
price of goods and services
and would discriminate
against rural Texans, who
rely on cars and trucks to
make long trips.
"Texas shouldn't have to
shoulder an unfair share of
the burden," he said. "A tax
on imported oil instead
would promote domestic
production and cut our de-
(pendence on foreign oil."
The great Alaska brown bear
weighs as much as 1,600 pounds
and measures up to nine feet in
length.
Finnell said both bills to
raise the federal gasoline tax
are pending in the U.S.
House Ways and Means
Committee in Washington.
He urged Texans to immedi-
ately contact their congres-
sional representatives to
oppose the proposals.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
ON TAX INCREASE
The Perrin-Whitt CISD will hold a public hearing on a proposal to
increase total tax revenues from properties on the tax roll in 1989 by
27.45 percent. Your individual taxes may increase at a greater or
lesser rate, or even decrease, depending on the changes in the taxable
value of your property in relation to the change in taxable value of all
other property.
The public hearing will be held on August 29, 1989
at Perrin-Whitt School Board Room.
For The Proposal: Johnny Thompson, Eddie Francis,
Mike Hutton, David Mitchell, and David Hardy.
AGAINST the proposal: NONE
PRESENT and not voting: NONE
ABSENT: Robby Blakley and P. R. Tillery,Jr.
I
The statement above ohows the percentage increase the proposed
rate represents over the effective tax rate that the unit published on
August 7,1989. The following table compares taxes on an average
home in this taxing unit last year to taxes proposed on the average home
this year. Again, your individual taxes may be higher or lower, depend*
ing on the taxable value of your property.
Average home value
General exemptions available

Under this proposal taxes on the average home would increase by $35.03
or 36.56 percent compared with last year's taxes.
Comparing tax rates without adusting for changes in property value, the
tax rate would increase by $.25 per $100 of taxable value or .33.33
percent compared to last year's tax rate. These tax rate figures are
not adjusted for changes in the taxable value of property.
