boro Gazette Thursday Octo-
ber 13,1938).
Eleven Year Old Girl
Saves Two Companions
From Drowning
Virginia Owens, eleven
year old school girl, in com-
pany with Nola Faye and
Beatrice Smith, 11 and 13
years old respectively, went
swimming after a school pic-
nic, and Nola Faye waded
into water too deep for her.
Beatrice, her sister, went to
her assistance, and neither
being able to swim, - the
younger girl pulled her sister
under the surface and in a
moment both were flounder-'
ing. Virginia Owens quickly
dived into the water, and
getting Nola Faye safely to
dry land, she returned for
Beatrice who by this time
was under water but her hair
floating marked the spot
where she was, and Virginia
seizing her hair and suc-
ceded in pulling her to shore.
Beatrice was unconscious
and Virginia began to apply
artificial respiration, and in
half an hour Beatrice was
revived.
According to Mrs. V.O.
Owens, mother of Virginia
and wife of an oilfield
worker, the little heroine
had never received swim-
ming or life saving instruc-
tion. She had taught herself
to swim in the irrigation
canals of Wichita County
when her father was em-
ployed there before coming
to Jack County.
E.W. Clark has started a
movement to secure a Carne-
gie medal for saving the two
girls from drowning.
NOTICE
TO TAX PAYERS
Due to the fact that the
County Tax Rate was with-
held pending word from the
Government Grant for the
new court house we will be
late in getting our Tax Roll
out this year. We hope to
have it completed and every-
thing ready for collection by
Nov. 1st.

Toys That Entertain
"The choice of your child's
toys is important because his
play today creates the taste,
skill, and attitude that must
serve him tomorrow," said
Mrs. Ira Whitsitt to the
jPleasant Hill Home Demon-
stration Club at the home of
Mrs. Joe Dixson, Oct. 6th.
Play material should be
simple to be enjoyed and to
be worthwhile for the child's
education. Mechanical toys
are no more than a fleeting
joy. The child wants to do the
acting instead of watching
the toy act. Too few toys are
betten than too many. If too
few toys are given, the child
supplements from the mate-
rial to be found. Otherwise,
too many prevent using his
imaginative ingenuity.
A 100% roll call was an-
swered with "The toy I en-
joyed most as a child.'
Games were played, led by
Mrs. Jap Smith and Mrs.
Floyd Dixson. The report of
the home demonstration
agent to the commissioners'
court was read to the club,
followed by a parliamentary
drill. Refreshments wen;
served to thirteen member!;
and one visitor.
The club adjourned to
meet October 20th, with
Mrs. Helvey, with Miss Ma-
son, leader.
(1988 Ed. Note - Mrs.
Whitsitt's words ring so true
to this father of four who
spent a small fortune for toys
so that his kids could have a
ball with sticks, oatmeal
boxes, and empty tin cans.
Today's parents would do
well to remember Mrs.
Whitsitt's advice as Christ-
mas rolls around again.)

More peculiar questions
next week.
***
Several candidates called
on the Gazette bright and
early Monday morning to
nave free notices inserted.
***
The citizens of Jack
County are fast realizing
that the Gazette is the paper
for the people. It is neither
published by a candidate,
nor is its strongest support
from the candidates. There-
fore, the Gazette will not
publish personal articles for
or against candidates unless
they pay for them, and then
they go in as advertisements.
We do not propose to make
our subscribers pay to run
candidates free. The Gazette
does not have to boost candi-
dates thay they may in re-
turn boost it. It's support is
from the people and by the
people it will stand, and it
will not fill its columns with
candidate's personalities
free, instead of news.

Bring your cord wood to
Jacks boro Mills and get the
cash for it.
***
A new saloon is to be
opened in a few days on the
west side of the square.
***
Depreciated county scrip
is good enough for jurors, but
is not good enough for the
County Judge and too good
for the local printer.
***
That was a grand mass
meeting of the U.L. Party
last Tuesday at the court
house. Hon. J.D. Gaines and
Geo. Craft of Wise County
were present. When a vote
was taken on a resolution,
there were only eight votes
cast: That number may be
considered small for a mass
meeting, (not a delegate con-
vention,) but it must be re-
membered that the call for
the mass meeting was only
for Wise, Jack, and Young
counties and published in
the Signal, an invitation
being extended to all who
could be present.
