Texas Library
Week Being
Observed
“Texas Libraries-Check Us
Out!” '
With that as their theme,
libraries throughout Texas are
planning special activities to
observe Library Week in Texas
during the week of April 5
through 11. Special bookmarks
are being given to readers by
the Mrs. J.A.B. Miller Public
Library.
Governor William P. Cle-
ments, an enthusiastic book
collector himself, has issued a
proclamation encouraging all
Texans to visit their libraries
and to take advantage of the
resources and services they
offer.
“From the child who is just
learning how to read to the
experienced scholar, Texans of
all ages, education levels, and
interests can enrich their lives
by using the state’s libraries",
he said in the proclamation.
This year’s observance of
Library Week is sponsored by
the Texas Library Association.
It is part of a national program
to make people throughout'the
United States more aware of
the resources in their libraries.
Honorary chairman for Texas
in 1981 is former Governor
Price Daniel, current chairman
of the Texas State Library and
Archives Commission. Kay
Stansbery of the Tarrant Coun-
ty Junior College Library heads
the Texas Library Association
committee that is coordinating
plans.
Libraries of all kinds have
undergone dramatic changes in
recent years. These include the
organization of regional public
library systems under the Tex-
as Library Systems Act, the
use of computers to improve
access to.Jnformation and
materials in both academic and
public libraries, and the expan-
sion of school libraries to in-
clude not only printed materials
but also non-print ones such as
films and sound recordings.
At a time when access to
information is vital to all Tex-
ans, the cost of providing infor-
mation is rising. By working
together to share resources and
by making cost-effective use of
computer technology, libraries
of ail sizes are seeking means
by which they can meet the
library needs of the Texans
they serve.
Be Alert
Next to lung cancer, pros-
tate cancer has the highest
incidence of any form of
male cancer. The American
Cancer Society advises all
men to be alert to changes
such as urinary difficulty or
continuing pain in the lower
back, pelvis or upper thighs.
