Calf Show Held Here
Monday Morning
Joe Beck of Jermyn won
first place in the 4-H Club
calf show here Monday
morning, with S.E. Wampler
of Vineyard winning second
and Harding Warren in third
place.
Seven calves were entered
in the show judged by
County Agent Andy Adams
of Graham. Joe Beck entered
four fine calves from Jermyn
and the other three boys had
one each.
Quite a large crowd gath-
ered in front of Wright Davis'
shop to see these boys' work
exhibited. Efforts to sell the
calves locally failed and the
boys took them to Fort Worth
stock yards.
Joe Beck's four calves
weighted a total of 3550
pounds bringing him a total
of $346.49; S.E. Wampler's
calf weighed 910 pounds and
sold for $86.45; Harding
Warren's weighed 865
pounds bringing $85.07 and
Cleon Denison's entry of a
beautiful white shorthorn
calf weighed 700 pounds and
sold for $69.50.
"There is no comparison
between the calves shown
this year and those here last
year," Mr. Adams told local
people after the judging was
finished. "These calves lack
only a few weeks feeding
before they would be in the
real show class."
County Agent Paul B.
Jones arranged the show for
the Jack County 4-H Club
boys here.
First Pouring of Concrete
For New Court House
The first concrete was
poured into the new court
house here last Thursday
morning by County Judge
J.P. Simpson. The main por-
tion of the footing for the
$200,000 building were (sic)
poured that day. The sides of
the basement on the south
side of the building were
started Wednesday of this
week.
Approximately a month's
time remains for the comple-
tion of this first unit of the
work under the PWA rules.
Nov. 28, 1939, is the dead
line for completion of the
whole building.
Plans are under way to let
the contract for the second
unit of work about the end of
March with the issuing of the
work orders about April 7,
representatives of that
branch and Volecker &
Dixson, Wichita Falls archi-
tects said late last week.
(Taken from the Jacks-
boro Gazette Thursday Eve-
ning March 14, 1889).
If Jacksboro could secure a
railroad it would give em-
ployment to several hundred
men in the stone quarries at
an early day.
***
Last Monday evening
when the jailer at Decatur,
went in to lock the prisoners
in the cells they knocked him
down and five made their
escape, one prisoner did not
leave the jail but unlocked
the door for the jailer to es-
cape and give the alarm. All
were re-captured but one
man, who was still at large at
last account.
***
Missouri is agitating the
question of compulsory edu-
cation. An opportune com-
ment on the matter comes
from an esteemed Demo-
cratic daily in these words:
"One of two things belongs
inherently to Democratic in-
stitutions; compulsory edu-
cation or educated restric-
tion upon suffarage. A gov-
ernment founded upon popu-
lar intelligence can only be
maintained by popular intel-
ligence."
Beware of the
Crop Mortgage
The time must come when
the farmers of this State and
particularly of this section,
must make a grand effort to
get out of and keep out of
debt. It is a life and death
struggle in any agricultural
community, and it is inevi-
table. The sooner it is made,
at whatever sacrifice, the
better for all. There will be no
individual or agricultural
progress, or independence on
the farm, until crop mort-
gages are relegated to the
past. Some debts must be
incurred, but keep the crop
clear of burdens. It is like
burning bread to mortgage a
crop. The present season is a
propitious one. Inaugurate
the reform at once. The Alli-
ance organ, the Mercury, has
sounded the alarm and made
the appeal in forcible and
attractive manner. As the
time reaches us for planting
this year, the Mercury hopes
that every one of its readers
will have firmly resolved to
stay clear of debt. As you
take up the plow-handles in
the early mom, before you
start your horse or mule on
his journey across the field to
break the ground for your
planter, resolve that you
won't buy on a credit; when
you reach the end of the field
cut a little notch on the fence
and say: "No crop mortgage
this year for me!" When you
reach the end of the field cut
a little notch on the fence and
say: "No crop morgage this
year for me!" Your heart will
be proud and your labors will
be light from Monday mom
to Saturday night when you
realize that every bushel of
com that you will gather
from those little green spouts
will be yours to hold for a
good price; and that every
boll of cotton that will ripen
under the bright rays of the
summer sun will be yours
and yours alone.
