Smithville's Operation Blue Santa
Santa wears a badge
By Eric Williams

Smithville kids Santa
Claus will.
The Smithville Police
Department has started an
Operation Blue Santa for
the Christmas season, and
Chief Frank Calabrese has
been astounded with the
results. >
“The program’s going
great,” Calabrese said
Tuesday. He said so many
toys have arrived that it’s
hard to get in and out of the
office next to Justice of the
Peace O.V. Warneke’s
where they are stored.
The toys will go out to

family of someone who has
been unemployed,”
Calabrese explained.
Combined Community
Action and the Head Start
Program helped locate the
families.
The ‘‘Blue Santa”
program is an optional
part of the Smithville
Police Department’s work,
Calabrese explained, ad-
ding that all of the work the
officers do for the program
is during off-duty hours.
Officers David Gann,
Jerry Falcon and Paul
Bradley have volunteered
off-duty time, Calabrese
said, adding that he was
really surprised at the en-
thusiasm they have shown
for the program.
Calabrese said that the
gifts he is trying to get into
the program are toys that

$50 to $100 worth of new
toys, he added.
First Year
This is the first year for
the program in Smithville.
Calabrese said that he had
helped with a similar
program when he worked
for a police department in
the Miami area, but that he
had never realized that it
could be successful in
Smithville.
“Operation Blue Santa”
started this year when a
man called the police
department and told
Calabrese that he had
loaded the trunk of his cars
with toys to take to Austin
to give to the “Blue Santa”
program there.
The man told him that he

away in Smithville if the
department could organize
away to do it.
Calabrese agreed and
organized the program,
apparently with good
results. “It gives me a good
feeling,” Calabrese said of
the response to the
program from the Smith-
ville Community, which he
said has , been
‘ ‘phenomenal. ’
A merry Christmas
to you and those you hold
most dear! Thanks for
your continued support.
