Southwest Conference Grid Race Looms As Closest In Years

With Chance For Tie
Mobley Sets New Ground - Gaining Record
By HAROLD V. RATLIFF
Asrociatxl Press Sport* Editor
The boys who deal in
statistics thumbed through
the records today but
found no Southwest confer-
ence football race closer
than the present one.
This means closer ooth in
scores and standings because
while Texas holds a mathematical
le; 1 it’s < nlv because the Lortg-
h' ms hay placed one more game
ian Tixa Or stian and Baylor.
1 .ich h s /c n defeated once.
TV. mat er e scores shows you
just how evenly-fought the race
has >een and gives vmi little to
ft' in 1 mpting to pick the
ultimate ch: i.guion
Only ton ■; imes have seen the
margin of victory fore than 14
points. In seven games — half
of the schedule — the winners
were not more than seven points
ahead.
In fact, had it not been for Ar-
kansas you could put this race
down as the closest of all time.
Arkansas lost three game by top-
heavy scores but no other team
met defeat by more than 20
points.
There were some mighty close
ones last week when Texas Chris-
tian scrambled things by drop-
ping Texas 13-7. Rice and Texas
A&M battled to a scoreless tie
and Southern Methodist beat
Arkansas 14-6 Baylor, playing
outside the conference, lost to
Tulsa 24-0.
"While T. C. U. climbed back in-
to the race and prevented Texas
from clinching at least a tie for
the title, the Rice-Aggies deac^-v
lock eliminated A&M. the defend-
ing champion, and made Rice's
chances slim indeed of gaining a
piece of the pennant
Southern Methodist held onto
the ragged edge by coming from
behind to beat Arkansas. S M.
U. has lost two games and has
three to play.
Texas rests this week prepar-
ing for its traditional Thanksgiv-
ing day battle with A&M but T.
C. LT. and Baylor will be risking
everything in games with Rice
and Southern .vlethodist respect-
ively.
Arkansas has finished its con-
ference schedule without a vic-
tory. The Razorbacks will close
out the season against intersec-
tional foes, meeting Detroit Sat-
urday and Tulsa at Tulsa next '
week. The Porkers couldn't
scratch in conference play but
they have a perfect intersect;.snal
record for the year, holding vic-
tories over Wichita and Missis-
sippi.
Among the leaders for the con-
ference title. Texas has one more
game. Texas Christian play. R.. -
and Southern Methodist and Bay-
lor Meets Southern Methodist
and Rice. It's possible that Tex-
as, TCU and Baylor will finish
the season in a triple tie for the
championship
Guess the heads: of the Cotton
Bowl would then jus: have to
draw straws to see which would
be the host team. Under a con-
ference rule the champion auto-
matically gets the invitation for
the Dallas bowl game If it does
not accept it can't play in any
other bowl and the second place
team goes to the Cotton Bowl.
