Wildcat Junior Varsity ‘gets the job
done’ against Sunray in perfect season
The Wildcat Junior Varsity fin-
ished its perfect season Thursday
night and claimed the District
crown with a 40-28 victory over the
Sunray Bobcats. The Cats com-
pleted their 2001 grid season with
an unmarred 10-0 record.
A Cody Helms blocked punt as
Thursday’s game began set the
Cats up at Sunray’s 28. Four plays
later, Patrick Vasquez rambled
into the endzone from 7 yards out,
and Tony Livingston carried the
hall across for two more. The Cats
rolled to a 22-6 halftime lead with a
41-yard Camden Dorris to Kobe
Looney touchdown pass, and an
interception and 61-yard return to
score by Looney in the second
quarter, capped by Auston Eng-
lish’ 2-point conversion.
Vasquez was the Cats' clean-up
man again in the third quarter,
ending a nine-play, 64-yaid drive
with a 5-yard touchdown run, and
another 15-yard scoring janut to
finish off Canadian's four-play
58-yard drive.
After putting up its first six
points on a 61-yard blast in the
first quarter, the Bobcat offense
was quiet until the third, when
their ball-carrier covered most of
the field on a 73-yard run for the
stripes. Another Bobcat touch-
down—this one from the 22-yard
mark—and a successful pass on
the conversion, narrowed the
Cats' still substantial third quar-
ter lead to 14 points. Canadian an-
swered Sunray with a Matt Young
7-yard scoring run to cap a
six-play, 55-yard drive and nudged
the score to 42-20 going into the
fourth.
The Bobcats put up the final
quarter's only points with a
20-yard touchdown run and
2-point conversion for the 40-28
finale.
Wildcat coach Craig Campbell
was proud of his team's successful
season, which ended with an im-
pressive set of stats:
• 12 different players scored
• Offense averaged 334
yanWgame
• Defense only gave up 174
yards/game
• Cats produced 3338 yards total
offense for the year—894 yards
through the air and 2,444 on the
ground
• In each of 7 games, the Cats
racked up 300 yards or more of-
fense, but gave up 300 only once
“It was an honor to get to work
with these young men,” Campbell
said. “I don’t know that I’ve ever
worked with a more aggressive
group. I want to thank them for all
their hard work, which makes
coaching a whole lot of fUn.”
Campbell praised “the men up
front"—Joe Franks, Lizandro
Escamilla, Brian Gallagher—who
don’t necessarily get their names
in the newspaper every week, but
who “made running and throwing
the ball a whole lot of easy. They
got very little recognition
throughout the year," Campbell
said, “but without these guys, we
wouldn’t be near the team we are."
Overall, Campbell said of his
team, “These guys weren't always
the strongest, fastest or biggest,
but they approached it as if they
had a job to do, and in all 10 games,
they got the job done.”

Plagued by injuries that deci-
mated their ranks this year, the
eighth-grade Cats were probably
glad the season was over, and that
they salvaged a 4-4-1 record from
their string of lad luck. The
Sunray Bobcats took full advan-
tage of that bad luck Thursday,
handing the Cats a 12-0 shutout in
the season finale.
The Bobcats posted touch-
downs in the first and last quar-
ters in what was an otherwise
scoreless game to claim the win.
“We played hard," coach Robert
Lee said. “We just could not keep
a drive going. It was a fun year.”
The JV defense got the job done, too, in plays like this one where

The seventh-grade Cats did to
Sunray what the Bobcats later did
to the eighth-graders—delivering
a 12-0 shut-out in the 2001 season
finale. With the victory, the sev-
enth-graders improved to a 5-3
record.
Matt Dickinson scored the
first—and only—touchdown of
the opening half with an 8-yard
sprint to goal to get the Cats roll-
ing. Ben Hill matched that with a
6-yard scoring run in the third.
The Wildcats completely
dominated the Sunray team."
coach Jimmy Chappell reported.
“The Cats produced four long
drives that ate up the dock and re-
sulted in two touchdowns."
“Offensively," Chappel said,
"Matt Dickinson and Kelby Dorns
had good nights running the foot-
ball. Dickinson also connected on a
35-yard pass to Michael Murray to
keep a key fourth quarter drive
alive.’
Chappell praised the offensive
line's blocking, saying that the
Cats earned at least one first down
on every offensive possession as a
result of their performance “Edu-
ardo Campos, Trams Forrest,
Colton Cooper, Will Hodges. Zach
Butler and Ray Williams deserve
kudos," he said.
Defensively, the Wildcats only
allowed one big play that took the
ball down to their two-yard line.
“On the next play, the Wildcats
forced a fumble and Juan Guillen
came up with the ball," he added
The Bobcats never mounted a ae-
rious drive after the second
quarter."
Also contributing on defense,
Chappell said, were Mason
Fletcher. Ben Hitt, Joaquin Lopez,
Zach Butler, Matt Dickinson.
Kelby Dorris, Eduardo Campos,
Willie Nofire and Juan Guillen.
The seven th gradera finished
the season strong, winning five out
of their last six games and ending
up second in the District
standings.
