American Cancer Society holds
local meeting November 1st
Jason McCoy, District 15 East
Representative of the American
Cancer Society conducted a meet-
ing of the Hemphill/Lipscomb
Counties of the Society Thursday,
November 1. The meeting was
held in the Fellowship Hall of the
First United Methodist Church in
Canadian.
The following slate of officers
was elected: President Arlene
Walker, Vice-President Colby
Leach, Treasurer Bobbie Jo
Ramp and Secretary Dorothea
Morehead.
The following chairmen were
appointed for areas of service:
Micah Lewis, Bike-A-Thon:
Jackie McPherson, Chairman.
Jan’et Schaef and Suxie Ander-
«on, Patient Services (Doctors
may recommend patients who
may be qualified for this service);
Jackie McPherson and Pat
Popham. Relay for Life, to be
held Friday, November 30 at
Lipscomb; Pat Popham, Memo-
rials. and Jackie McPherson,
chairman, Carolyn Barnett, Lois
Wright and Judy Stock, Road to
Recovery.
McCoy commended Julie
Culver and Karen Floyd for their
Bike-A-Thon participation, and
conveyed the ACS’* appreciation
for their efforts in making this
event a successful one.
Announcement was made of
the Great American Smokeout
scheduled for November 15.
The “ Loan Closet" used by the
people of Hemphill and Lipscomb
Counties under the supervision of
Bill Popham and Wayne Baker
was discussed. Many items have
been donated and have been
loaned to cancer and arthritis pa-
tients, and/or wreck victims.
Things such as wheel chairs,
walkers, potty-chairs and patient
beds are available. McCoy indi-
cated that other communities are
looking at the local plan to incor-
porate in their services.
It was reported that the
Lipscomb County Health Fair
held on October 17 in Darrouzett
was a success. County agents
were contacted about giving ma-
terials to the schools in Lipscomb
County.
Packets for the ‘Tell a Friend"
Breast Cancer Awareness were
issued.
Following the meeting a Road
to Recovery workshop was con-
ducted. Under the umbrella pro-
tection of the ACS, this program
trains drivers to provide trans-
portation for patients receiving
cancer treatments.
The next meeting will be at
noon on January 23. 2002 in the
same location.
