MONSTERS, INC.: Pixar.
Animation Finally, a mow that
has g strong story, rawir sharp
comic tuning and beautifully pol-
iahisl [lerformances. Monstrrs,
Inc, is a worthy auccettaor to
Pixar'* A Rug'* Life and both
Toy Story saga*. lt'» a joyous,
boisterous fable about a secret in-
dustrial enterprise that lurks be-
hind closet doors in kids'
bedrooms—a dream factory's vi-
sion of a scare factory. Monsters,
Inc. employs creatures that omi-
nously lurk inside closets and give
children the frights. The chil-
dren’s screams are used as a
power source in Monntropolis, the
freakazois dimension in which the
monsters live But that power is
drying up because kids don't
scare so easily anymore. How-
ever, Sullivan (voice of John
Goodman), a furry
biue-and purplr giant, is one em-
ployee that stiU exceeds his man-
dated scare quota. His best pal is
his one-man crew, Mike (voice of
Billy Crystal), a bouncy,
bile-green little guy with one big
eye and a really big mouth. The
breakneck wit of Monsters, Inc .
covers a lot of ground and makes
fun of everything from paranoid
thrillers as well as the cartoon
form (You don’t dare look away.)
Any artifact brought back from
the human world is contaminant

dentally enters Morutropoltx.
panic erupts. But this adorable
three year old wins Sulley’s
heart, and ours, and it'a up to
Sully and Mike to return her un-
harmed and without being
blamed for the mishap. This all
leads to a chase that features
damming closet doors leading to
other location#, leading to other
jokes There hasn't been a movie
in years to use creative energy as
efficiently as this one. This is one
hot movie that doesn't waste a
joke or a thought How can you

DISTU RBANCE: John Travolta

hard to think of him wasting so
much talent in so many bed mov-
es. R

superior cast. Porter (Beatty), a
successful architect and Griffin
(Gary Shandling), and antiques
dealer, are caught cheating on
their wives (Keaton and Goldie
Hawn respectively. With any
Beatty character such sins are
bound to be multiple, and here
they involve a beautiful cellist
(Nastassja Kinski), a sexually
hungry heiress (Andie
MacDowell) and Mona. Marian
Sekles makes an hilarious grand
dame, and Charlton Heston lends
an edge of seif-parody as a gun
nut. The pleasure in Town and
Country is in watching seasoned
stars expertly go throughout
their familiar paces. R

SWORDFISH: (2001) John
Travolta. A ruthless high-tech
superspy, Gabriel Shear
(Travolta) is out to rid the world
of terrorists by being so brutally
retaliatory himself that they will
lose interest in their work. To fi-
nance his global vigilantism.
Shear needs to tap an interna-
tional bank holding govern-
ment-confiscated drug money.
For this he promises a ten million
dollar fee to a computer hacker
named Stanley (Hugh Jackman),
who alao serves is a moral oppo-
nent and hapless pawn. Sword-
fish becomes little more than an
elaborate toy that when plugged
in performs pyrotechnic visual
feats at regular market-tested in-
tervals. Strictly for a popcorn
night. R

DR. DOLITTLE 2: (2001)
Eddie Murphy. As an older
Dolittle, a mellower Eddie
Murphy graciously allows himself
to be upstaged by dogs, birds and
alcoholic French monkeys in this
charming sequel. The plot, a bit
disjointed, involves a woodlands
godfather in the form of a beaver
who wants Dolittle's help in foil-
ing a voracious logging company.
Dolittle's task is to prepare a bear
to lead the struggle. When a teen-
ager calls him Pops, a chagrined
look crosses his face but, to his
credit, Eddie Murphy knows
when the shoe fits, and he wears it
reasonably well. PG

NEW YORK IN THE
FIFTIES: Documentary. Betsy
Blankenbaker's excellent docu-
mentary is the story of New York
City when it was the Bohemian
hot bed of new artistic expression,
free love, hot jazz, and radical pol-
itics. Based on the best-selling
book by Dan Wakefield, the film
follows Wakefield’s restless re-
bellion which had him leave I ndia-
napolis and escape to New York
with dreams of writing a novel,
falling in love, meeting
like-minded souls and question-
ing the meaning of life. New Y ork
In the Fifties weaves a tapestry
of stunning archival footage of
New York with interviews and
footage of the icons of the
day—Kerouac, Ginsberg,
Baldwin, Mailer, Basie and oth-
ers. Offering modern day per-
spective and reminiscences are
writers, actors and artists such as
Joan Didion, Robert Redford,
Nat Hentoff, Gay and Nan
Talese, John Gregory Dune, Wil-
liam F. Buckley, and Calvin
Trillin—all part of the rich cul-
tural and artistic scene of the
time. To order:
