Furious Counterattacks Beaten
Off As Americans Break Enemy's
Hold On Tulagi In Close Action
i
By ROGER D. GREENE
Associated Press War Editor
American “devil dojC’ marines appeared to have won
[the first round in the * *ven-<la\-old battle of the Solomon
hmds today, beating (d’f fnrii-tis Japanese counterattacks
at Ihrt e invasion beachheads in the DOO-mile-long island
chain.
A correspondent of tht Australian broadcasting com-
mission said ii was believed that the marines, strongly re-
inforced. had broken the
Japanese hold on the Tula-
gi area.
“The Japanese have been
driven fn m many of their
defensive positions after
fierce hand-to-hand fight-
ing." t h e correspondent
said.

The Allies have air superiori-
ty and are using it as sea as well
as on land ”
A F S Navy communique said
the marines firmly entrenched
after six days of violent hand-to-
hand fighting, were now consol-
idating their positions.
'Supporting naval forces are
engaged in bittei lighting.” the
navy said.
The communique did not
specify whether the enemy was
bringing up warship reinforce-
ments or using Und based air-
craft to bolster the defense of
their ground forces. However.
Allied reconnaissance showed a
<;purt in enemy shipping activ
lty around Rabaul. New Brit-
ain. a major base for Japanese
troops and supplies moving to
the Solomons.
Striking to paralyze enemy re-
inforcement. American Flying
Fortresses smashed at the Ra-
baul base for the fifth time m
five days yesterday. Gen. Doug-
las MacArthur's headquarters
said the raiders left a 15,000-ton
hip and tvv. medium-si/ed ves-
‘■iT in Harm. and a fourth ene-
my ship foundering.
Without tlie loss of a single
i.i»mber. the giant Fortress craft
shot down one of eight challeng-
ing .Japanese fighters and damag-
ed from three to six others. Unit-
ed Nations headquarters report-
ed.
Rabaul lies 700 miles north-
west of the Tulagi sector m the
southeastern Solomons, where
the navy said U. S. marines were
battling to expand their gains on
three islands in the Tulagi vein-
itv — presumably Florida, Guad-
alcanal and Malaita.
