Bastrop meets LaGrange; SV goes to Manor
Bastrop’s 1980 Bears foot-
ban squad goes against La
Grange Friday night, seeking
a first victory since 1978.
Game time is 8 p.m. at
Erhard Field. A combined
Freshmen-Junior Varsity
squad will play La Grange
there on Thursday at 5:30
pan.
Head Coach Dennis Gorka
has changed some first team
assignments on both offense
and defense following the
Bears' 24 to 7 loss against
Elgin last Friday. Danny Dvis
is replacing tail back Fredrick
Johnson and Shane Witcher
takes over Curtis Moore's
tight end post on the starting
offense. Greg White will start
as left cornerback for Tim
Moncure. Keith Saegert for
Dempsey Hibbs as right
cornerback and Mellon Li-
muel for Fredrick Johnson as
safety on the starting defense
team.
This week the Bears
worked to sharpen tackles
and their passing game.
La Grange, which is not
part of Bastrop's UIL District
12 AAA , is believed to have
a strong team this year with
four offense and four defense
veteran players. Last year
La Grange was champion of
what is now District 25 AAA
and had a seven win, four
loss record. Guard David
Roensch is called “extra
special” in some pre-season
polls.

Smithville’s varsity travels
just outside Bastrop County
Friday night to meet the
Manor Mustangs, picked by
some polls to be a district
champion this year.
“They’ll be tough. They’re
big and outweigh us in the
line," Smithville Head Coach
Rick Amick warned Tuesday.
“But we’re ready to go
against them."
The Tigers will field
essentially the same starting
offense and defense units as
used against Flatonia last
Firday night when a 1212 tie
emerged.
Manor has six offense and
six defense holdovers from
last year's team which posted
a 6 to 4 winning record.
Manor quarterback Danny
Helton, halfback Doug Habbit
and ends Bryan Davis, and
Tim Schultz are dependable
yardage gainers and men to
watch on the Mustang squad.
The contest is not a District
25 AAA for Smithville. The
Tigers' next district game is
Oct. 17 against Texas School
for the Deaf.

R.E. Measom appeared
before the Smithville City
Council Monday night to
complain that no law enforce-
ment personnel had been
present at the Smithville and
Flatonia football game the
previous Friday night in
Smithville.
Measom went on to read to
the council newspaper arti-
cles detailing gunfights and
attacks on officials at
Oklahoma high school football
games, in citing the need for
some law enforcement of
ficials to be present.
Mayor Lawrence Skelley
said, “This is a complete
surprise to me." Skelley went
on to say that no arrange
ments had been worked out
with the Smithville School
District on the matter of
security, but that he was
under the impression that an
officer was going to be
present as a routine police
assignment.
Measom then responded
that he had overhead an
officer make the comment,
“If they won't let me work
where I want to, I won’t work
where they want me to.”
The remark apparently
refered to previous council
action setting up a policy that
Smithville police officers
could not wear their uniforms
when performing security
duties for private businesses
on the officers own time.
Alderman Charles McKe-
own, Alderman Pat Starns,
and Alderman Robert Smith
all voiced the opinion that at
least one officer of supervi-
sory rank should be present
at all hometown games at the
city’s expense.
Mayor Skelley thanked
Measom for bringing the
matter to the attention of the
City Council and said it would
be remedied.
