It's a Crying Shame-Bui
Hayfever Scourge Continues
By MAC ROY RASOR
AUSTIN. Tex., Sept. 19—ol’i—
Pollen is blowing again in Texas.
But State Health Officer George
W Cox says that he can't <io any-
thing for the sneezing victims of
the hay fever scourge—and he
thinks it’s a trying shame.
“It's one of many ailments in
the state going neglected because
Texas is without an adequate
health research laboratory,’’ Dr
Cox declared.

“The malady is active in dif-
ferent sections of the state on
ditferent persons just about 12
months of avery year," he said,
adding that he knew of no part
of Ttxat that it entirely free
from fhe malady for everyone.
Viewing allergies as one of the
most perplexing medical prob-
lems at present, the health officer
pointed out that hayfever sufferers
fall into a multitude of classifica-
tions, depending upon their partic-
ular allergy to one or more of the
many different pollen and dusts
"It frequently necessitates a
study of the disease in individual
cases and may indicate very little
likelihood of one surc-curc ever
being discovered for all cases," he
said.
“At present the only positive,
solution for everyone seems to be
the finding of a different climate
or section of the country which
gives relief. And one person might
find relief in the very section
where dozens of others are severely
suffering."
The health officer expressed n -
{yet that Texas docs not sec lit
to establish facilities that could
study thus and numerous other di-
seases.
“U.st year there were (1,212 deaths
in Texas from cancer and the state
is doing absolutely nothin;; to try
to combat the dicseasc.
G t h c r diseases urgently in
need of study in Texas are dysen-
tery, polio, typhus and the com-
mon cold. Water and milk need to
be watched carefully and sewage ,|lr
is a most pressing problem
“We could establish a first jV-wiicnlY
class laboratory such as Texas
must have if it is ever to fulfill
its obvious duties in the safe-
guarding of public health for
less fhan half a million dollars.
It could ho operated for a little
more than $100,000 a year.
"The savings in actual money to
say nothing of the prevention of
misery and death in the state
would run into millions of dollars
each year,” the doctor declared.
Dr. Cox reviewed statistics
which place Texas 51st among the
03 states and territories and Dis
trict of Columbia of the United
States in per capita appropriation A new snap-on cap will enable
for health services. Washington, a glass jar of coffee to hold it,-,
D. C. is at the top of the list with flavor indefinitely The ullia-vac-
an appropriation of $2.31 per cap- uum lid can lie re-sealed airtight
ila. Texas' appropriation is H.l with the palm of the hand
cents per capita. Only Ohio and '
Missouri rank lower.
But until some still undiscuv -
ored remedy js found or until the
stale can get an adequate labora-
tory which might yield some re-
lief. Dr. Cox says his best advice
for hay fever sufferers is to keep
a full supply of handkerchiefs.
