Survey: Texans 'Growing'
The Office of Survey Research at
the University of Texas — which also
conducts the Texas Poll for Harte-
Hanks Communications — has re-
leased figures that shed a little light
on Texans’ “figures."
According to the OSR, more than
28 percent of Texas residents were
overweight in 1994, compared to just
18 percent in 1989.
Lack of vegetables in the diet may
have something to do with this pro-
clivity for portliness. The survey found
that only 16 percent of Texans in the
16-24 age group eat five or mote serv-
ings of fruits and vegetables per day.
About 1,500 Texans were ques-
tioned in the random survey.
Coat Reverses ITT Law Ruling
Race cannot be used as a factor in
admissions at the University of Texas,
the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in
New Orleans ruled last week.
The ruling reversed a lower court
opinion that admissions policies at (he
University of Texas unfairly work
against white students who apply to
the UT School of Law.
The suit, filed by four white stu-
dents who were not granted admis-
sion to the law school in 1992, claimed
the school did not hold white and mi-
nority students to the same entrance
standards.
UT System officials suspended ad-
missions for a week to analyze the
ruling. They said they would ask the
Attorney General Dan Morales to
appeal the ruling.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
TO CITIZENS OF BIG LAKE
"I’d like to start with a quote from Former President Ronald Reagan "Well
- Here we go again." In last week's Big Lake Wildcat, you read where my
close, personal opponent, Pete Sandel, still thinks we need a change in
leadership in the Mayor's position. Well he may get it, if he and his TEAM
can haul people to the polls to vote like they have a history of doing."
"One thing I would like to inform him about is the fact that the City of Big
Lake is a paying member of the Concho Valley Council of Governments and
whomever is Mayor of Big Lake, it will be their responsibility to be a voting
board member, as I have been for the past years that I have been a mayor and
council member."
By being a member of Concho Valley Council of Governments, Big Lake
and its citizens have received:
1. Block grant for street paving south side.
2. Numerous assistance on our landfill project.
3. Filter crusher and oil disposal facility.
4. Wood chipper for alley cleanup and compost.
5. Don't forget 9-1-1.
6. Computers in schools and library.
That is a few of many services COG offers by Big Lake being a
member.
I realize that I have advanced thru the CVCOG chairs of leadership
more than Reagan County’s last COG board member, but "Pete" your father
is the very person who encouraged and asked me if I would start attending the
"COG" meeting because he dropped out!
Your father also encouraged me to run for the Office of Mayor, when I was
on the City Council.
Citizens, please be informed that all this was before Pete, the son retired
from the military and moved back into town. Since then, Mayor H. F. Ritchie
has not been able to be a good enough Mayor to please Daddy.
NOW - That's all I have to say - about that.
(Forrest Gump ) quote.
Citizens of Big Lake, let me just say this in closing. I planned on not
mnning this term. I was approached by many, many people who encouraged
me to run again because they felt that Big Lake didn't need 'two' mayors in
City Hall. So this term, if the people want Mayor H. F. Ritchie for another
term, they had better get out and vote. If you don't your next mayor will be
Pete Sandel. (Nothing Personal Pete! This is Politics).
Thank You,
Mayor H. F. Ritchie
