"If il is to be, it is up to me..a
sign on the wall, outside the Special
Education room at Reagan County
Elementary School.
"Kindness comes very close to
the benevolence of God..."
.. .Randolph Ray
My latest rcsolution-to be a
kinder, better person... and I am in
the bestest mood, after the Garden
Club Spring Convention held in Big
Lake last weekend. The festivities
started Friday night with a light sup-
per at Vicki Fisher's lovely home.
The menu included small sand-
wiches, chips and dips, veggies and
dips. Also a luscious fruit arrange-
ment of fresh strawberries, kiwi
fruit, apples, oranges, pineapple
chunks, and green and purple
grapes. This "thing of beauty" was
created by Louise Matthews. A va-
riety of cookies were for dessert.
Guests included "out of town"
guests from Del Rio, Breckcnridgc,
and the Hill Country, members of
Reagan Garden Club and the Yucca
Dew Club.
After we had "pigged out" on the
light supper, we trooped out to the
pool area. I heard one of the local
garden club members ask Vicki if
she had arranged for a full moon to
peek over the rock wall! It was just
perfection, otherwise!
One other note about the pool
area... Vicki has a couple of swing-
ing chairs... When my daughter, Jo
Theriot, gave me a bamboo swing-
ing chair for my birthday-shc said.
. ."Mom, you'll love it I know! It
gives you such a warm, womb feel-
ing." I did love it and I still have it,
many moons later... was it my 59th
birthday, do you think? I must re-
member to ask Vicki about the
warm, womb feeling!
The Ozona Garden Clubs had the
breakfast on Saturday morning and
Menard Garden Club did the deco-
rations for registration and also for
the luncheon tables. The lovely lun-
cheon was catered by Laurie
Swepston.
Mrs. Betty Turner, President of
Reagan Garden Club presided and
the meeting got underway at 9:30
a.m. Jo Anne Stout gave the invoca-
tion. "Welcome to Big Lake" was
given by Hon. Mike Elkins, Reagan
County Judge and Lela Midkiff
gave a "Welcome to Spring Con-
vention."
One of the officers included this
in her report, and I agree whole-
heartedly. .. "Garden Club binds us
together in our love of the earth, and
the plants which grow upon it, and
the special caring which embodies
all who love to plan and grow and
harvest. A thread connects some
people. Gardeners are connected by
a green, always growing vine. It is
anchored in the earth and keeps us
together through local, state and
world gardeners. I hope this will
always continue and with each of us
doing whatever we can, we can be
"progressive."
Someone else quoted Madge
Horn of Del Rio. . . "to be happy
forever, you must become a gar-
dener. .. For to cultivate a garden,
large or small, you work hand in
hand with God."
Christi Christian, President of
the Yucca Dew Club reported they
had recently planted a pine tree at
the Reagan County Historical Mu-
seum and the keep up the Veterans
Memorial at the Reagan County
Courthouse.
Betty Turner, President of die
Reagan Garden Club reported that
all members participate in Spring
Convention, held March 25 and 26
in Big Lake. They have had a num-
ber of interesting programs. They
arc responsible for planting the pe-
can trees in the Reagan County
Park, also the raised flower beds in
the park, the Berm at the North
swimming pool, planting the trees
in front of the gazebo, die "inner
gardens" at the Care Center, and
SI50.00 wordi of gardening books
to the Reagan County Library, and
also the upkeep of the flower beds at
the front of the Library, "Gardener
of the Week," and die Christmas
Lighting promotion and judging.
Whew! Ladies, take a bow!
Before lunch, there was an in-
stallation of new officers for 1995-
97. Tinkie Speck and Laura Eaves,
members of Reagan Garden Club
were installed as incoming Presi-
dent and Corresponding Secretary
of District VIII.
After a divine lunch of baked
chicken breasts, frozen green peas,
oven-browned potatoes, tea, coffee
and crescent rolls, and chess pic for
dessert.. .We were all ready for that
2-hour nap. Ha. But then we became
very interested in "New Concepts in
Home Arrangements" presented by
Mrs. Rachel Fillmore, Master
Flower Show Judge from
Kingsland, Texas. Her display was
so interesting, and her talk so de-
lightful. .. we were enchanted.
Mrs. Billie Joyce gave a creden-
tials report and Mrs. Sherri Gay,
from the Yucca Dew Garden Club,
gave a delightful courtesy resolu-
tions.
Meeting was then adjourned, but
I have just been in the bestest mood
ever since last Saturday. Il must be
from participating, even slightly, in
the Spring Convention!
