Owls hang on after leads vanish
By Jeff Berger
Anvil Herald Sports Editor
Hondo’s steady scoring was
just enough to outlast Marion’s
streaky scoring.
The Owls scored in the teens
in each quarter, while the Lady
Bulldogs were cold in the first
and third, scoring single dig-
its, and hot in the second and
fourth, both times scoring in
the 20s. The end result was a
64-61 Hondo win at the Activi-
ties Center, as a Marion three-
point attempt in the waning
seconds was off-target.
Hondo, now 6-1 on the year,
will go to Floresville’s Jaguar
Classic starting today (Thurs-
day) for three days of stiff com-
petition. The Owls open play
today with a 10 a.m. matchup
against San Antonio Christian,
and will play again later in the
day, against either Floresville
or Burbank.
On Tuesday, the Owls will
be back at home to take on La
Vernia at 7:30 in the Activities
Center.
Against Marion, Hondo saw
double-digit leads disappear
twice, including an 11-point
advantage with two minutes
left. But the Owls ultimately
held on for the win.
Both teams had a few empty

trips up and down the floor
to start the game, but Hondo
scored three straight times to
go up 6-0, eventually stretch-
ing the lead to 18-8 at the end
of one period.
Marion, which never led
once the entire night, spent the
whole second quarter closing
the gap, finally pulling within
35-33 at halftime, then tying
the game on its first possession
of the third period.
Hondo, however, answered
with an 8-0 run, and steadily
built its lead to 12 points, at 55-
43, with five minutes left in the
game.
That’s when the Lady Bull-
dogs began to rally again, go-
ing on an 8-1 run to tighten
the margin to 56-51. The Owls
countered with six straight
points of their own, all coming
from Hannah Bohmfalk, with
four free throws and a layup off
an assist from Cindy Stanuki-
nos. That gave Hondo a 62-51
lead with two minutes left.
But back came Marion, once
more. Three buckets in three
trips down the floor accounted
for a quick 7-0 mn. Tyler Barnes
hit a pair of free throws with 29
seconds left, to put Hondo up by
six, but Marion’s Cami Davis hit
a bucket-and-one with 18 sec-
onds left to cut the gap to 64-61.
Hondo was fouled with 10 sec-
onds left, but both free throws
missed and Marion got the re-
bound, calling time out with
7.2 seconds to play. The Lady
Bulldogs set up a three-point
attempt for Davis, but the shot
missed, and Marion was unable
to get another shot away.
Bohmfalk led Hondo with
19 points, including 5-of-7
from the line and seven re-
bounds, while Barnes was also
in double figure scoring with
17 points. Reagan Luce added
nine points and J’Lynn Rothe
scored seven.
For Marion (0-5), Davis
scored 25, with a 10-for-10 ef-
fort at the free throw line. In all,
the Lady Bulldogs were 16-of-
18 from the stripe.

Hondo wins low-scoring affair
Universal City - In a low-
scoring game such as the one
Tuesday night, a 15-point third
quarter turned out to be pretty
huge for the Hondo Owls.
Hondo outscored Randolph,
15-6 in the third period, and
went on to win by that same
nine-point margin, 44-35, in a
non-district road game.
The Owls had trailed 9-6 af-
ter one quarter and led 17-16 at
halftime.
This weekend, the Owls (4-0)
have an open date after a Fri-
day game with Poteet was can-
celed. On Tuesday, it’s back to
San Antonio, to face the Cole
Cougars in a 7:30 p.m. game.

Hondo begins tournament
play next weekend, when they
host the 32nd Annual Hondo
Basketball Tournament.
Tuesday evening, all of the
Owls’ scoring in the third pe-
riod came from their two lead-
ing scorers, with nine points
from Erick McCollum and six
from Jose Ytuarte. Both wound
up with 15 total points in the
game. Micah Gentry finished
with nine points, all on shots
from behind the arc. McCol-
lum also hit three from three-
point range.
“We got 39 combined points
from our top three scorers,”
said Hondo coach Fred Mc-
Collum, “and that’s good. But
we need to get more than five
from the rest of the team, if we
want to keep winning.”

JV girls’ basketball team and went on to a 46-27 win over the Owls in the Activi-
ties Center. Brianna Campos led Hondo with 11 points, with eight from Prysilla
Ramon, six from Julia Peters and a bucket from Kayli Henry.

tivities Center. Hondo led 17-4 after one period and never looked back. Cam-
pos led the Owls with 12 points. Annette Diaz and Halie Payne both scored six
points, with four each from Henry, Sandy Cortez and Julia Peters.
The JV Owls (6-3) will play at home again on Tuesday, taking on La Vernia
at 6:15.

Hondo’s JV staged a fourth quarter rally, but came up a little short against
Medina Valley, in a 41-36 boys’ basketball loss. The Panthers led 34-21 after
three periods. Trey Lemons scored 10 points for Hondo, with nine from T.J.
Johnston, six from Ryan Martinez and three from William Keilman. Adrian Bra-

after three quarters. Cole Rosenbaum led the team with eight points, while
Carson Stoner and Moreno both scored six. Johnston had five points and Keil-

be ranked based on their finish in the pool, and then paired off with the similar-
ranking team in the other pool for Saturday’s final round. The JV Owls will also
travel to Cole on Tuesday for a 6:15 game.
Freshman Girls
Hondo dominated Boerne in freshman girls’ basketball action last Tuesday,
with a 33-8 victory. Annette Diaz scored 11 points to lead all scores, followed
by nine from Monica Vega. Lace Silva and Janessa Garza both scored four,
with three from Lynzie Andreozzi and two from Meagan McKay.
Tuesday’s game with Marion was canceled, since Marion didn’t have
enough players from a freshman squad.
The freshmen (4-0) will travel to La Vernia on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. game
against the freshman Lady Bears.
Freshman Boys

lowed by Rees Saathoff with seven, Rangel and Rochat with six each, Vallez
with four, Eitze with three, Brandon Richter with two and Dale with one.
Tuesday, the freshmen defeated Randolph. Details will be included in next
week’s issue.
The freshmen (3-1) will go to the eight-team Bandera Freshman Tourna-
ment on Friday and Saturday. Hondo will open against Llano on Friday at
10:30 a.m., and will play a second round game in the afternoon, against either
the Bandera White team or Uvalde. Other first-round matchups include Lytle
vs. Medina and Medina Valley vs. Bandera Blue. The freshmen will visit Cole
in a 5 p.m. game on Tuesday.
