DISTRICT COURT.
Judge Scott adjourned the dis-
trict court and returned to his
home in Franklin Saturday. The
docket was a light one.
District Clerk Hooks and his
deputy, Mrs. Hooks, keep right
up with the court work and their
books and records are models of
accuracy and clean work.
COUNTY SITKKINTBNDKN 1'.
County Superintendent Gillis
has been pretty busy the past
week with looking after the dis-
trict schools, passing upon cases
that arise, visiting around urg-
ing that the communities do not
take backward steps upon the
special school tax questions, and
in examinations of applicants to
teach. The past week their were
eleven white and six cohered ap-
plicants for certificates to teach.
Of these, nine white and two
colored applicants passed.
Much interest, not only in the
communities involved but through
out the county, is taken in the
election to be held tomorrow
(Saturday); one to abolish the
special tax altogether and the
other to reduce it from twenty
cents to five cents.
COUNTY ASSESSOR’S OFFICE.
James Date, county assessor,
accompanied by County Commis-
sioners Ross and Wiese, went
down to Austin Monday to attend
the State Assessors’ association.
The tax assessors, togeeher with
the feounty commissioners and
county judges as advisory mem-
bers. meet once a year to discuss
ways and means of securing a
equitable assessment of all pro-
perty. The great question be-
fore them this year was to get
at the matter of a full rendition
of property so as to relieve the
small land owner of the unequal
taxation under which they have
so long stood.
sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Holtzclaw. who went to
Belton Monday in the case of the
Mexican known as “Bull Dog.”
says the jury gave the Mexican
four years on a charge of at-
tempted criminal assault on a
18-year old white girl in this
county. This is the case Judge|
J. C. Scott transferred to Belton
on his own motion because of the
meager testimony ami of the pre-
judice of the public in this county
in such cases.
COUNTY CLETK’s OFFICE.
County Clerk Kemp issued the
following marrisge licenses the
past week:
D. Y\. Childress and Lillian
Ho waixl.
Louis Mull and Ida Dalson.
