FOR 'COLLEGE I LOVE'
Miss Annie Shelton, HPC Graduate,
Emeritus Professor, Donates FarmA gift classified as "the true
spirit of Howard Payne" by HPC
officials, has been received by the
college.
It is a 225-acre farm north of
Brownwood, donated by M i s s
Annie Shelton, an HPC graduate
who taught at the college 35 years
before she retired in 1953.
"It is a great boy for me to make
this gift," Miss Shelton said. "I will
always feel greatly indebted to
Howard Payne for offering me the
opportunities that have enriched
my life. My teaching years were
happy ones."
Explaining her decision to make
the gift at this time, Miss Shelton
commented that "I want to help the
college that I have always loved
and I have every confidence in Dr.
Newman and his administrative
staff and faculty to maintain its
traditions and high ideals and
standards."
'This gift represents the lifetime
devotion and savings of one of
Howard Payne's most cherished
friends," said Dr. Guy D. Newman,
HPC president, who added that "it
is our hope that it will be the
source of inspiration for many sub-
sequent bequests to the institution
that means so much to so many.
'Not only Miss Annie, but her
whole family has had an intimate
interest in Howard Payne," Dr.
Newman said, mentioning, in par-
ticular, the loyal friendship to the
college of her brothers and sister-
J. Horace (Cap) Shelton, beloved
track coach at HPC; Mrs. J. T. Floyd,
Joe Shelton and the late Dr. Ben
M. Shelton of Brownwood and the
late Jack Shelton of Houston.
The farm, which is in an irrigat-
ed area, now has 75 acres in cul-
tivation.
Recalling that she purchased the
farm in her early teaching years,
Miss Annie says that she had saved
$75 a month from her salary and
had accumulated approximately
THE LINK, DECEMBER, 1958$5,000. The late W. A. Bell of
Brownwood, for many years an
HPC trustee, told her about the
property and took her and her mo-
ther, the late Mrs. Betty Jane Shel-
ton, to see it.
Miss Shelton, who had graduat-
ed from Howard Payne in 1916,
returned to the college as a faculty
member after teaching one and
one-half years at Paint Rock. She
was one of the corps of faculty
members who made personal sac-
rifices to help Dr. Thomas H. Tay-
lor, then HPC president, to keep
the college active during the de-
pression period. She took her mas-
ter's degree from George Wash-
ington University and did graduate
work at Columbia University.
Always a favorite with the How-
ard Payne students, Miss Shelton
earned their friendship by her
trust and interest in them and their
activities.
She was on the campus when
the Howard Payne Baptist Student
Union was formed and she served
as its sponsor 25 years, serving
also as sophomore class sponsor
and sponsor of the pep squad.
-4Three times, one of them after
she retired, the HPC annual, the
Lasso, was dedicated to Miss Shel-
ton. She had served as a Lasso
editor as a student at HPC. She
also prizes the football presented
to her by one of the Yellow Jacket
teams who dedicated a game to
her.
Her interest in the students ex-
tended into the important field of
their church activities. For 25 years,
she was superintendent of the col-
lege Sunday school department at
the Brownwood First Baptist Church,
where she has been a member since
1912. Last year, she taught a col-
lege girls' class, and this year is
chairman of her circle in the
Women's Missionary Union.
Adding prestige to the college
faculty record through her work in
the community, Miss Shelton is a
past president of the Dollie Robnett
Club for HPC faculty women and
wives, of the Brownwood Branch
of the American Association of Uni-
versity Women and the Mary Gar-
land Chapter of the Daughters of
the American Revolution and has
served as state chairman of social
studies for the AAUW.GIFT FROM A FRIEND Miss Annie Shelton, who taught at Howard
Payne College 35 years, gives Dr. Guy D. Newman, HPC president,
the deed to her 225-acre farm north of Brownwood, which she has
