Howard Payne
"Man of the Year"
Thomas J. Renfro (BA '27), Judge of
the Court of Civil Appeals, Fort Worth,
has been selected by the HPC commit-
tee as Howard Payne "Man of the
Year." Judge Renfro will be present-
ed this award at the half-time cere-
monies of the homecoming Howard
Payne Yellow Jacket-Abilene Christian
Wildcats football game, November 22,
at 2 p.m. He will deliver the annual
Alumni address at 10 a.m. Thanksgiv-
ing day in the Mims Auditorium.
On June 1, Tom Renfro received ap-
pointment to the Court of Civil Ap-
peals. Governor Shivers made the ap-
pointment to the high legal position,
Associate Justice for the Second Su-
preme Judicial District, which com-
prises 12 counties.THOMAS J. RENFRO
Judge Renfro graduated in 1927 from
the University of Texas Law School,
and has resided in Fort Worth since
that time. He was elected Judge of the
County Court at Law No. 2 of Tarrant
County in 1934, and in January, 1946
he was appointed Judge of the 96th
District Court, which position he held
until he received the June appointment.
While a student at HPC, the Judge
taught some at the Academy. He won
the Armstrong Oratorical Medal at
Howard Payne, and a place on the
college Theodoric debating team.
He and Mrs. Renfro (nee Betty Bate-
man, of Dallas) have two children:
Tommy, age 15 and Shelia, age 12.
They are members of the Broadway
Baptist Church in Fort Worth, where
the Judge is a deacon, and an officer of
the Sunday school.
In addition to his professional duties
and church activities, Judge Renfro
has made outstanding contributions in
service through fraternal and civic or-
ganizations. He is past Exalted Ruler
of the Elks Lodge in Fort Worth, a
member of the Ceremonial directors of
the Shrine, and is a member of the Ki-
wanis Club.

Walker Memorial Librar
of1Ma ed To The Memory Of
John Allen and Mary Elizabeth Walker"Ground was broken at Homecoming,
November 11, 1950, for the Walker
Memorial Library, pictured above in
stage of construction, just over the
mid-point.
Howard Payne's new library will be
a two-story, including a mezzanine
floor, red brick, with white stone trim,
Georgian style, and will harmonize
with other buildings on the campus.
The symetrical architectural beauty of
this magnificent building will be a con-
tinuing inspiration to the faculty, stu-
dents, trustees and friends of Howard
Payne College through the coming
years. Modern in its every conception,
the library will serve in comfort and
efficiency, an ever growing student
body of the college.
WALKER MEMORIAL LIBRARY
IS A BUILDING BEING ERECTED
BY FAITH! The college had on hand
an approximate $100,000.00 to start con-
struction. A campaign in the city of
Brownwood and the college last Feb-
ruary and March netted in cash in the
excess of $25,000. There have been
times in recent weeks that work shut
downs have been faced-BUT GOD in-
tervened-doors opened, and the money
came that construction has continued.
To date $145,440.32 has been paid out
orn the library to all objects-materials,lebor, etcetra. A movement was launch-
cd during 1950 to promote the Major
Gifts program of Texas Baptists, in
which soliticitation of individual Bap-
tists for special gifts for the library
building resulted in good success. The
movement is continuing with renewed
emphasis.
Supplementary to the Major Gifts
program is the Memorial plan purpose-
ed to help pay for the Memorial Li-
brary. The $40,000 memorial to the
late Dr. M. E. Davis, under the direc-
tion of Rev. R. C. Tennison of Hamil-
ton. has been making good progress
and gives promise of successful culmi-
nation. A $5,000.00 memorial has been
taken for Judson Taylor Quinn. Sev-
eral hundred dollars have already
come in and friends are at present busy
in District Ten raising the remaining
amount of this memorial. Mrs. W. A.
Bell and family have set up a $12,000
memorial for the late W. A. Bell, long
time trustee for Howard Payne College.
Other memorials are now in process
of study, with good prospects of mater-
ializing, which if and when they do
come to pass, and included with the
above described memorial programs,
will very greatly aid in the erection
debt free of the Walker Memorial Li-
brary.Reunions of Classes

Feature Homecoming
Howard Payne Homecoming to be
held the evening of November 21, and
through Thanksgiving day, November
22, bids fair to be the largest attended
of any of the many former Ex-Students
gatherings on the campus.
The Musicale-a light variety music
show which will be given Wednesday
night, November 21, by the fine arts
department of the college, under the
direction of Dr. Clyde Jay Garrett, will,
as in previous years, offer strong at-
traction for local exes and others from
a distance. Classes of '11, '21, '31, and
"1 meet this year for reunions. The
meeting of classes of the four decades
will see many returning to the college
campus.
The Jacket Club breakfast will have
as guests the Yellow Jacket Ex-Letter
Men, a new feature of Homecoming,
which will witness an additional tide
of Exes to swell the Homecoming
group.
HPC "Man of the Year" to Speak
Tom J. Renfro, (BA '27), Judge of
the Court of Civil Appeals of Fort
Worth, will deliver the annual Alumni
address. Because of his splendid re-
cord achieved scholastically, in the
realm of Christian citizenship, and in
his profession, the committee has chos-
en Judge Renfro to receive the honor,
Howard Payne "Man of the Year."
This unusual and striking Homecoming
feature, was initiated last year with the
distinctive award going to Lt. Col.
Jzmes Minor ('40) of Post.
A tour of Walker Memorial Library,
now well beyond the midpoint of con-
struction, will be of vital interest to all
former students, while renewal of old-
time fellowship, along with the Band
Concert and the annual Barbecue offer
tempting inducements.
Renewal of the football grudge battle
between the Texan Conference giants-
the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets and
the Abilene Christian Wildcats in
Homecoming game offer fans an after-
noon of thrills which will be unexcel-
led in any big time contest.
