Bastrop Chamber hunting for industry
“We haven’t attracted oar fair
share of industries " coming to the
Greater Austin Area, outgoing
Bastrop Chamber ctf Commerce
President Sieve Best told Chamber
leaders last week.
Best will head the Chamber’s In-
dustrial Committee in 1985 and he
said hell concentrate on arranging
for “good, professional presema
tions " of Bastrop facts to industrial
prospects such as “important cor-
porations." ..■ £
Best indicated the Chamber will
compile a slide show and other aids
to explain advantages of locating
in Bastrop.
“We want to get in real close
with the Austin Chamber and po-
litical leadership,” he said.
In the past the Austin Chamber
has not directed any industry to
Bastrop as far as is publicly known
whereas Georgetown. Round
Rode, Manor and San Marcos have
all benefited from Austin Chamber
contacts. However, the Austin
Chamber has said it would be in-
terested in helping Bastrop.
Bankers here have said industrial
prospects look for level industrial
land with good utilities at lowest
possible prices. But at a industrial
briefing seminar held several years
ago by the Bastrop Chamber indus-
trial brokers and railroad execu-
tives said Bastrop would be a good
location for certain types of indus-
try, perhaps distributors and ware-
houses. Since then, Sanborn’s
Wholesale Tours announced it
would move here from Austin, a
small auto parts distributor opened
here, a small animal specimens
company, an offshoot of the

nounced it would finally pot its

To aid parents of infants prone
to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome,
a fund drive has begun to buy mo-
nitors that sound the alarm when
a child stops breathing.
SIDS is a somewhat mysterious
disease that strikes newborns, es-
pecially those born premature.
Otherwise healthy children, when
stricken by SIDS, will stop breath-
ing and die. The cause is still
unknown.
SIDS is also known as "crib
death." A healthy child simply
passes away during the night for no
apparent reason.
Mike Price, of Price Electric in
Bastrop, has an eight week old
daughter. Michelle, who is prone
to the- strange affliction. After
Michelle stopped breathing be-
cause of SIDS and had to he re-
vived using cardiopulmonary
resuscitation, he decided to do
something to help other parents of
SIDS prone children.
Price is trying to raise enough
money to huy two monitors that
will alert parents or medical per-
sonel if a child stops breathing.
The monitors cost about $2,500
each and would he loaned to par-
ents through Bastrop Memorial
Hospital.
The monitors arc attached to the
child at night while it is asleep. It
the child stops breathing for more
than 20 seconds or his or her heart
rate becomes fast or slow, the mo-
nitor emits a shrill alarm.
The monitors can by rented in
Austin for $250 a month, but Price
says many parents can’t afford that.
Without the monitor, the only al-
tematives are to h;iv e someone stay
up all night to watch the child, or
for/tne parent to sleep with one
hand on the child’s chest
Price also wants to raise enough
money to buy a more expensive
monitor for the hospital. At a cost
of about S2().(XX). a monitor can he
obtained ihal will give a continu-
ous television screen readout w ith
a paper printout of heart and
breathing rates. The more expen-
sive monitor would allow doctors
to analyze a child's breathing pat-
terns over a 24-hour period.
Price, who is working to raise
money in conjunction w ith the Na-
tional SIDS Foundation, has placed
donation jars at businesses around
Bastrop, jars have been placed at
the American Legion Post. Three
Sisters Cafe. Ebners Hardware, the
three Express Lane Grocery Stores
and at Price Electric.
The Sons of the American
Legion have donated $50 and Price
said he plans some kind ol fun-
draising event in 1985.
