Chief files on threat
By Richard Goldsmith
A Smithville man has been ar-
rested by Travis County Sheriff’s
deputies for allegedly threatening
Smithville Police Chief Kevin
Madison after the man’s daughter
was arrested days earlier for driv-
ing while intoxicated.
The saga began Oct. 25 when
Carolyn E. Rogers, 22, was
stopped for speeding at Garwood
and Fourth streets in Smithville.
She was subsequently charged with
DWI and resisting arrest and was
booked into the Bastrop County
Jail.
Madison said Ms. Rogers, who
is a student at Southwest Texas
State University, did not cooper-
ate with officers during her arrest
and that her father, Doyle Rogers,
of Smithville, later compounded
the problem by trying to block
police vehicles at the County Jail.
Madison and Rogers also had a
heated discussion on Oct. 26 at the
Smithville police station and ac-
cused police of injuring his daugh-
ter during her arrest.
But Madison said he decided to
file a charge of “retaliation”
against Rogers last Saturday be-
cause he said Rogers threatened
him and tried to start a fight when
the two happened to wind up in the
same service station in Del Valle.
Madison says he was on the way
to Austin when he saw Rogers on
the Highway. Madison said he
speeded up to avoid Rogers, but
when he stopped to make a phone
call at the service station in Del
Vaile, Rogers was also there get-
ting gas.
Madison said Rogers challenged
him to a fight and “blew up” when
Madison told him his daughter
needed to come to the police sta-
tion to take care of two more war-
rants that had been issued for her
arrest — one for disorderly conduct
and one for criminal mischief.
Madison said Rogers tried to in-
Rogers was arrested at work in
Austin Thursday morning at the
Twin Towers Office Building and
was later released on personal
bond.
He is charged with retaliation, a
third degree felony.
Rogers was on the agenda for the
Monday night Smithville City
Council meeting, but he did not
show up. He had asked to speak to
the council in closed session.
Retaliation occurs when £ pub-
lic servant or witness is harmed or
threatened.
