Bastrop “not an easy Homecoming opponent”
Bears make Eagles claw for win
By Ellen Moore
Tired of being labled the “easy
win for Homecoming’' team,
Bastrop’s Bears Friday had the
Georgetown Eagles wondering if
they had made a fatal choice.
Matching the Eagles play for
play, the tears sent the host team
to the lockers at halftime with on-
ly a 0-0 tie that almost turned the
homecoming into a wake and only
a desperate trick play in the final
minutes of the fourth quarter allow-
ed the Eagles to claim a 7-3 win.
A week earlier, Bastrop had
; forced the Heame Eagles to accept
> a 21-21 game ending tie for their
; homecoming, not much to
; celebrate there either.
| Friday at Georgetown, it look-
! ed like the Bastrop squad had
1 declared open season on anything
that wore a blue and white uniform
as they went through the line,
around it and under it to get at the
) Eagles quarterback and hold the
much-touted 6AAAA powerhouse
• to a single touchdown — and that
came in the final minutes after the
i Bears had put the only three points
I on the scoreboard in the third
| quarter and held on like a momma
! bear protecting her cubs.
Bastrop boosters were obvious-
i ly enthusiastic.
j Bastrop High School Principal
I Gayle Haass called it the “best
defensive game I’ve seen in two
years.”
It was the season opener for
these two teams in District 6AAAA
South Zone. And, Bastrop want-
ed it bad. The Bears were as fired
up as they’ve ever been, banging
each other on the helmets and cry-
ing out words of encouragement.
The Eagles have embarrassed the
Bears in the past with their superior
speed and size, but this year the
Bears had no reason for embar-
rassment.
Played Hard But Lost
“They played their hearts out,”
a stunned Bear Head Coach Roger
Martin said, following the loss.
“I’m real proud of them,” he con-
tinued, making sure he had physi-
cal contact and words of
encouragement for each player
coming off the field. “I told them
if they played as hard as they
could, they could bpat them (Ge-
orgetown). Well, they played hard,
and made some mistakes, and they
didn’t beat them.” Nobody said it
was fair.
“I hate to lose,” the slightly be-
wildered coach admitted, “but I’m
proud of these kids. We’re just go-
ing to do everything in our power
to get ready for Taylor (the next
district game for the Bears).”
Other fans gathered around the
field as the Bastrop boys ran off.
aid to a person, all talked of the
excellent play of the Bears. “I’d
sure rather go down swinging,”
official fan James Schmidt of the
BHS business office commented,
“and we sure did. What a game.”
Perennial faithful fan and Texa-
co station owner B.J. Mayes, ac-
companied by his lovely wife
Wilma, commented, “Those boys
played football out there tonight.
I know it’s been said before, but
I’m saying it again. It’s not whether
you win or lose, it’s how you play
the game, and those boys played
one good game. They have noth-
ing to be ashamed of.”
The Bears didn’t appear
ashamed. Just weary and disap-
pointed that it hadn’t gone their
way, despite the all-out effort.
No Score Till Third Quarter
And, there was effort aplenty.
Both teams showed a solid, at times
inspired, defense. And both
offenses sputtered in the teeth of
the ferocious defense. It was a
bone-shattering, hard-hitting,
bruising battle for every minute of
the game, which saw no score un-
til the Bears’ field goal in the third
quarter and the Eagles’ sole touch-
down in the fourth quarter.
The game began under a
threatening cloudy sky, and despite
a Bear recovered fumble in the Ea-
gles’ first possession, neither team
generated much offense or excite-
menf Tn the first quarter. The Bears
recovered one rumble, and with
2:17 to go, another. This second
was alertly snagged by Donny
O’Neal, recently brought up from
the junior varsity team. The Bears
defense, led by many, but inspired
by Zach Harris, Ken Crawford,
Mike Purcell, Shane Neal, T.C.
Vasquez, and “Papa Joe” Valle-
jo, team captain and head cheerper-
son on the field, was tpugh.

Pleased With Tie
The two teams went into the
dressing rooms at half with the
score tied 0-0, and boths teams
should have been pleased with the
score. But, in the third quarter, the
Bears threatened immediately. Ge-
orgetown’s opening drive stalled
and Bear ace Roderick Craney
returned the punt to the 45 yard
line. Quarterback Pat Barnett then
passed over the secondary to
Craney, for a first down and a good
gain to the 23 yard line. Alternate
quarterback Lee Neef then starred
in two keepers, getting to the give
yard line for another first down.
Then the Eagle defense shut
down and with 7:25 to go in the
quarter, Neef was brought in to at-
tempt the 27-yard field goal. Neef,
who premiered last week with a
kick slightly wide, corrected his
