Buyer’s remorse can be
a sorry-full experience
There are few things in life
quite as discouraging as buyer's
remorse—those months of antici-
pation before a special purchase,
totally ruined by unrelenting guilt
when you get it home. It's a real
sorry-full experience.
For the past several months
I’ve been wanting a new soft-
ware package for my computer.
Every time I would gather up the
nerve to buy it, one of the kids
would develop an ear infection,
outgrow her shoes or see a new
toy she just couldn’t live without.
Their afflictions always cost
money, and my guilt was too
consuming to be a real consumer.
Over this past weekend, how-
ever, I saw a sale circular for a
software package I had been
drooling over. Glancing at my
family, I noted that everyone was
well, their shoes still fit and we
had collected enough Lion King
toys for a satisfying afternoon of
play. I was going shopping!
It was difficult to contain my
joy as I wandered up and down
the isles of the computer store.
Slowly and methodically 1
inspected each box and acted like
a shopper on an unlimited bud-
get. The smell of new packaging
and the distant beep of scanning
wands was a dream come true.
With little thought, I bought
without a concern in the world.
On the drive back home, how-
ever, I started getting a familiar
sour feeling in my stomach. The
guiltier I felt, the sicker I
became. When I finally pulled
into our driveway, I fell like a
heel. How could I yank money
away from my family? I didn’t
deserve any new software, I
frowned. My old stuff was suffi-
cient for my modest needs.
Besides, one of the kids would
probably outgrow something by the
end of the afternoon.
“Don’t you like your new soft-
ware?” my husband asked over din-
ner. “You haven't taken it out of
the box yet."
“I can’t decide. It’ll probably go
back to the store tomorrow. I just
don’t feel comfortable spending
money on myself,” I mumbled,
picking at my food.
My husband shrugged and went
back to his potatoes. “Gee, you’ve
waited a long time for that package.
Why don’t you keep it for a couple
of days and sec if you change your
mind?” he asked.
Later that evening, I was still
grieving. Somehow all the joyful
anticipation 1 felt in the store had
vanished. It wasn’t fair. I’d
worked hard for that new software
and now this motherly guilt thing
was ruining everything—again.
Men don’t ever feel guilty, 1
thought Probably because after
mothers claim their guilt, and
there’s not that much left to share.
That night 1 had a terrible night-
mare. We had run out of food and
die only tiling I could find to feed
my children was a software box.
Even though it was steaming hot
and covered in white cream gravy,
the box still wasn’t edible. 1 was
sobbing hysterically as I cut up the
box and placed it before my hungry
children. Before anyone tore off a
piece, however, I woke up—

drenched in sweat and feeling
guilty. I had betrayed my chil-
dren for a hobby.
“I'll take it back,” 1 whispered
in the dark, “first thing tomor-
row.”
The next morning I sat at my
computer and looked at the soft-
ware box. It wouldn’t hurt to test
it just this once, I thought, peck-
ing on the keys. Eventually
lunch rolled around and T ate in
front of the computer so I could
get in a few extra pecks before
my return trip to the store.
As afternoon faded into early
evening, I was still in my paja-
mas, pecking away in the dark.
My motherly guilt had subsided.
I hadn’t betrayed my children; I
had enriched myself. My family
will always come first, no matter
what software package comes
along, I declared silently. I know
who ranks highest in the pecking
order of life.
“Honey, you've been sitting
lliere most of the day. What are
we going to do about supper?”
my husband asked, flipping on
the light.
"I can’t stop—it's just now
making sense,” I said, hovering
over the keyboard. “You guys
order a pizza. “I’m working on
my computer."

million people in 33 Texas counties,
is one of ten public library systems
formed by the Texas Library Sys-
tems act (1969), one of the few
beneficent acts ever accomplished
by Texas legislation bi-partisan
agreement, vows one pundit. In
addition to rotating books, cassettes,
films, etc., participating public
libraries possess the advantage of
cooperative purchasing power,
while retaining local autonomy.
It was (then) library board mem-
ber Jerry Brock, an automation pro-
fessional who now lives in Utah,
who “not only proposed the grant
application,” but who also “volun-
teered to spearhead and coordinate
the entire effort,” said Library
Director, Ms. Karen Williams. “If
we had hired another professional
with his expertise, it would have
added thousands of dollars to this
project,” she said. “It is largely
because of Mr. Brock’s advocacy
that we obtained the matching
NETLS grant.” ’
The new system has three work
stations served by the file server.
One is the online public access cata-
logue (OPAC). That means “one
can search for an item by title,
author, subject or even "search all
fields for the desired reference
work."
"And,” she added, “every day the
system gets better because we enter
(program) as much information into
escort transportation, help with
shopping and errands, housekeep-
ing, yardwork, home safety aware-
ness, benefits counseling and cer-
tain medical care.
A local organization that sup-
ports use of these services is the
Sachse Go-Getters. The Go-Get-
ters has become a valuable net-
work for seniors and always wel-
comes new members.
The group is designed to provide
support for seniors and also has a
full schedule of activities.
The club reports that currently
there are about eight Go-Getters
that have taken ill and are now on
the mend.
If you are interested in becom-
ing a Go-Getter and taking part in
their activities, call city hall for
information at 495-1212. New
members are welcome.
