81 Years Young
Evelyn McAbee
by Linda Grace-West
She begins her day at 5:00
a.m. with prayer, sixty bend-
downs, and a balanced
breakfast.
Every silver-white hair in
place, a glowing complexion,
immaculately attired, and
wearing a pair of “Reeboks',
Evelyn McAbee leaves her
home each day.
Evelyn walks twenty-one
miles every week the weather
allows. Her walking is her
therapy her way of coping
with life and meeting its
trials victoriously.
Residing in a small home
that has every pin in place,
Evelyn keeps her hands, as
well as her mind busy. She
learned to crochet as a young
girl and has since mastered
the skill.
Her bedspread won second
place at the State Fair of
Texas in 1978, and another
placed in the “Premier Divi-
sion". Dozens of beautiful
pieces fill her drawers and
guest bedroom each
Christmas season. The
monies derived from this
endeavor help to make her
money stretch, but her
favorite hobby is helping
other people.
“I'm so blessed. I just love
helping other people. My
friends, Mrs. Housewright,
Mrs. Pelton, and Mrs.
Monaghan sometimes need
my help and I just love doing
anything I can," states
Evelyn.
She and her beloved hus-
band, Mac, traveled in thirty-
two states in the United
States and two in Canada.
Mac's work with the United
States Army Corp. of
Engineers took them to the
construction of seven dams,
the last stop Wylie's Lake
Lavon. That was in 1953.
Many happy years married
to an “angel" have provided
Mrs. Mac with nothing but
wonderful memories. Her
beloved Mac is gone, but she
states, “I know the Lord has
left me here to do something
for Him every day He gives
me."
At 81, Evelyn hardly stops.
She finishes her daily walk,
keeps her crochet going, and
eats a balanced diet including
a cup of yogurt at bedtime.
This well-balanced regime
enables her to attend Happy
Circle, Thursday Game Days,
playing 42 with friends, the
National Federation of
Retired Persons, and Eastern
Star.
Reminiscing about forty-
five years of marriage to the
best man in the world. Evelyn
recalls, “We never had any
fights or fusses. We would
just walk off if we disagreed
and talk about it later. We
just had a wonderful
relation.”
"Every body liked Mac. He
was so outgoing. We met at a
Halloween Party and Mac
asked if he could take me
home. He looked so grand in
his suit with that pretty
black hair," states Evelyn.
There are so many treasures
missed in Evelyn's life, now.
One of her favorite times was
the twenty-one years she
worked at Douthitt's Variety
Store (now Wakefield's) "I
just loved working there and
meeting all the people every
day. I sure do miss it. says
Evelyn.
Still, she is not letting any
grass grow under her feet.
With the Lord as her compa-
nion, she walks out each day
and meets life head-on. "I
just have to keep busy every
day,” states Evelyn.
Wonderful memories, hard
work, giving to others, and
order in life have provided
Mrs. Mac with a successful
recipe for living that is well-
worth imitating.
