Power Points returns this week
The Wylie News, along with
dozens of other newspapers
around the Lone Star State, will
participate in the 1997 Texas
Power Points Football Contest,
which features a $1,000 cash prize
to the weekly statewide winner.
Featuring primarily National
Football League games but includ-
ing a healthy dose of Big 12 and
other games of local interest,
Texas Power Points offers a unique
twist on the traditional pick-the-
winners football contest.
Contestants not only project
winning teams but they must also
rank their selections along a
weighted point scale according to
their confidence in them. The 16-
point line is the most valuable, the
1-point line the least valuable.
Your “surest” guess goes on the
16-point line, your “least sure”
guess goes on the 1-point line. The
points total 136. The winner of the
$1,000 each week is the person
who amasses the most of those 136
points. (Tiebreakers-total points
cored and total offensive yardage
in a designated game-will break
any ties.)
Contestants may enter only one
entry form statewide each week.
The rule is strictly enforced.
Filling out additional entries, then
putting your friends’ or relatives’
names on them violates this rule.
Any such entries are destroyed
prior to judging, and decisions of
the judges are final. Full official
rules accompany each week’s
entry form in the newspaper.
In addition to the weekly state
winner, (here is always a local win-
ner. Along with its co-sponsoring
merchants, The Wylie News will
award a local price of $25, a T-
shirt, and other goodies from par-
ticipating drop points to the local

person with the high score each
week.
The weekly entry form will
appear in the newspaper each
Wednesday, deadline for contes-
tant entry will be 2 p.m. Fridays
except Thanksgiving week, and
results will be published as soon as
they are available.
No purchase is required. Fac-
simile entry forms will be accept-
ed. You must be at least 8 years old
to play, so even children may enjoy
the contest.
Enter the contest by clipping the
weekly form from the paper, mak-
ing your selections, (hen dropping
off your entry at the outlets of co-
sponsoring merchant prior to the
weekly deadline. The first entry
form will appear the week of Aug.
24. First games are the weekend of
Aug. 30-31.
A concurrent, companion con-
test, Texas Showdown, will pit par-
ticipating communities against
each other with the top six scoring
towns at the end of the 17-weck
promotion sharing cash prizes for
youth and community projects.
Wylie took sixth place out of over
a hundred Texas cities in the 1996
Showdown.

Wylie High School’s ninth grade
volleyball team opened the season
on Aug. 19 with a tri-match against
McKinney and Mesquite. Coach
Thmi Nauyokas’s squad of 17 girls
bad a successful season in the eighth
grade and the talent showed in the
early matches.
McKinney was the Pirates’ first
opponent and the first game was
close with Wylie coming out on top
15-11. In the second game of the
match, however, McKinney came
storming back and defeated Wylie
154. Wylie then took the third game
15-2, showing the depth that has
Coach Nauyokas so enthusiastic.
Following the match with McKin-
ney, Wylie played Mesquite and
showed the same determination.
After losing the first game 15-9,
Wylie again showed talent from the
entire squad by winning games two
and three, 15-5 and 15-9, respective-
ly.
Outstanding individual perfor-
mances came from Tara Burris, to
outstanding serving and NatiD
Coles for her excellent performance
as middle blocker.
In volleyball, the winner of the
match is the team that wins the first
two games. Coach Nauyokas said,
“The team is ready to play. There
will be a lot of opportunity for all
the girls to receive plenty of minutes
on the court.”
The third match of the season was
played Friday night against Mes-
quite for the second time in die
week. This time the matches were
not close, 'ihe Pirates established
their dominance early and never
looked back winning the first game
15-3 and the second game by almost
the identical score 15-4.
Katherine Graves helped the team
with her outstanding serving. In the
shooting department, Thera Chap-
man was terrific and Chandra Camp-
bell shut down Mesquite’s attack
with her defense.
Coach Nauyokas said, “My goal
this year is to teach the fundamen-
tals and get all these girls ready to
play on (he varsity.”
