Drouth Taking Affect on Wildlife;
Lack of Food Killing Deer Daily
EDINBURG, Tex.,. March 24
(U.R)—The current drouth in South
Texas is having a far-reaching
adverse affect on the area’s wild-
life, and several game, wardens
have reported, sighting as many
as 10 deer a day dead from a
lack of food.
Ironically, it is the healthier,
more desirable animals that are
most susceptible to the drouth.
Game wardens explain that
gaunt javelinas, barren does and
weather much better than heavi-
er animals or does with fawns.
Almost as destructive as the
direct effect of starvation are
such indirect ailments as blind-
ness among javelinas, brought
on by a deficiency of Vitamin A
in their limited diet.
Wardens reported that the wild
porkers have existed principally
on prickly pears for months.

Tyler Junior College
Earns 2nd Title Try
HUTCHINSON, Kan., March
24 (U.R)—An aggressive Tyler,
Texas, team, the 1949 champion,
will get another shot at the na-
tional junior college basketball
championship tonight when it
faces Northeast Mississippi in
the finals.
Both Tyler and the Mississippi
entry had struggles last night in
the semi-finals,
Tyler had to fight off a tough
Moberly, Mo . team to win, 65 to
62, and Northeast shaded a
strong Ventura, Calif., aggrega-
tion, 71 to 68.
Northeast Mississippi should
be keyed up for this one. It lost
the 1950 crown in a tight contest.
Many of the javelinas have taken
to foraging for food alone which
game officials regard as a sure
sign of weakness among the ani-
mals. —-----
The weakened animals are also
becoming less resistant to the
ravages iDf parasites, ticks and
fleas.
Farmers arid ranchers south of
San Antonio and Corpus Christ!
have reported many deer feeding
alongside their cattle.
Although no tstimate has been
made of the number of deaths
caused by the drouth, wildlife
men believe the toll will be high-
Th fact that many deer will
migrate to more lush grazing
grounds makes it hard to fix an
accurate figure on the number
killed.
Wildlife men also point out that
effects of the drouth will be felt
in future years. The Vitamin A
shortage will decrease reproduc-
tion among quail and wild ani-
mals. This, combined with the
fact that the proportion of sur-
vivors is much greater among
less healthy animals,’ will mean
a drop in wildlife supplies for
several years to, come

Spinning is no longer consid-
ered a specialized art of fishing.
For the past several years fish-
ermen have become increasingly
aware of its possibilities and the
excellent sport spinning affords
the angler
Originating in Europe, spinning
now has a firm hold on the an-
gling fraternity in this country.
When first introduced, the
'complete departure--in appear-
1 ance, at least—from the conven-
tional rod and reel created the
erroneous impression that spin-
ning was a sort of makeshift
gear to fill in between casting
and fly tackle.
Spinning today enjoys its own
well-deserved niche in the art of

ROWENA, March 24 (U.R)—An
Air Force training pilot and his
pupil were killed near here yes-
terday in the crash and explo-
sion of their T-16 type training
plane.
Spokesmen at Goodfellow Air
Force base at San Angelo identi-
fied the dead as 2nd Lt. James
R F.sler, 25. of Alden, Pa., and
Aviation Cadet William A. Dea-
ton, 124! Hazel, Tulsa, Okla.

angling and will
more popular.
Spinning comes easily. In fact,
one need not have had any pre-
vious experience in fishing with
casting tackle to learn the use
of spinning gear in a very short
time.
„ However, the claim that spin-
ning can be mastered in five min-
utes may be carrying optimism
a bit too far.
It is true that the rudiments of
casting with spinning tackle may
be grasped easily and in a re-
markably short period. But con-
tinued practice is still an impor-
tant factor in the art of angling
no matter what form is utilized.
Practice on water does much
to impart needed confidence and
supply the “feel" that actually
makes the tackle a part of the
fisherman. With any type of
tackle experience is gained only
by practice
Spinning does afford the begin-
ner long, hard casts without
backlashes, usually a vexing
part of learning to cast.
The trend is toward light tac-
kle in both lures and casting
equipment and the use of heavy
tackle rapidly is decreasing in
popularity with both fresh and
salt water fishermen.
If this week’s Plug 'n Trigger
has brought out the temptation
to give spinning a trial, remem-
ber there is suitable and unsuit-
able equipment to tempt the un-
wary.
Buy the best equipment with-
in your means and in type and
size recommended for the form
of fishing desired.
All true spinning reels are
slung under the rod grip, be-
cause like a fly reel that is'the
most comfortable position. The
axis of the spool ii parallel to
the rod so that line will spiral
off unimpeded.
They also have a long leg
which keeps the spool at a dis-
tance from the rod so that the
spirling line will have less ten-
dency to slip against-the rod.
There are graduated sizes in
spinning reels and in the rods to
match thdm and certain sizes of
line for each. So, be sure your
spinning equipment is matched.
