jessjawin The Mirage Of Black Gold !
With the glut of oil on the international market, The Saudis, prime pro-
ducer and power broker in OPEC, are “suffering” from their diminished
production.
The Saudis are capable of producing nearly 11 million barrels of oil daily.
As a leader to curtail production in order to keep prices high, they have
reduced their daily production to two million barrels daily. They had high
.hopes that the rest of the cartel would fall in line.
OPEC members have not. They are each scurrying to keep production
high in order to garner as much revenue as possible from current markets.
This increases the glut and depresses prices further. Some experts think
pump prices could drop another 25 cents per gallon within the next six to
nine months.
The London Financial Times “Mideast Markets” said recently: “The
Saudi economy is much sicker than has generally been reported.” U.S.
firms have been warned not to sign new contracts with the Saudis unless :
they have the sanction and blessings of both the Saudis and U.S. officially.
The shakey House of Saud has aroused the suspicions of the Ameri-
can Round Table composed of prestigious American business concerns.
Forty-five of the leading companies, with projects in Saudi Arabia, met with
Saudi officials. They complained of “intolerable and costly delays” in
payments which are now one half billion in arrears. The total bill due the
companies is over $1 billion.
The New York Times reported from Riyadh recently that “large scale
projects involving both Saudi and foreign contractors have been shelv-
ed, delayed, called back or put out again for rebids.”
“Mideast Markets” reported that Saudi financial reserves were dropping at
the rate of $1 billion per month from their present pool of $70 billion. Oil
revenues were expected to be about $42 billion for 1984-85 and will only
approximate $34 billion next year, Saudi investment income is expected to
fall to $10 billion next year.
The Saudis are also faced with the problem of maintaining the new
roads, seaports, airports and telecommunications facilities it built. Some
say it costs as much each year to maintain the services and facilities as it
cost to construct them.
The Saudis were enjoying approximately $90 billion per year (and more)
from their oil revenues in the lush days of 1973-1980.
Now their black gold has turned into a near mirage.
They have the reserves in the ground.
But the cost of engaging in a protracted oil war with their OPEC cartel
partners may compel them to pump more for less.
This would only add fuel to the simmering fire.
That’s what this is all about.

Islamic Jihad Claims Bombing
Of Oldest Scandanavian Synagogue
The Islamic Jihad pene-
trated Copenhagen’s secur-
ity Monday and bombed
Scandanavia’s oldest syna-
gogue as well as the office of
Northwest Orient Airlines.
A caller in Beirut, Leba-
non told the Associated
Press the Islamic Holy War
(Jihad) is claiming credit for
the attack which wounded
27, three of them were in
serious condition.
Two explosions hit the
synagogue almost at the
same time that a bomb was
tossed through the window
at the Northeast Orient
Airlines office.
Windows and a door were
blown out at the synagogue.
The Meyers Minne Nursing
Home, adjacant to the
synagogue on a narrow
street bear Copenhagen’s
17th-century Round Tower,
was damaged. Its
occupants had to be evac-
uated. Seven of the resi-
dents of the nursing home
were injured.
The anonymous caller to
the AP was quoted as
saying: “If certain countries
believe they are free of our
strikes, let them know that
sooner or later we shall
reach . . . the headquarters
of all Western and Arab
leaders who spin round the
imperialist universe . .. one

Apparent Thaw Is Seen In
U.S.S.R. And Israeli Relations
There is a summertime
thaw in relations between
the U.S.S.R. and Israel.
Israel Radio reported last
Friday that Moscow is
considering the restoration
of diplomatic relations be-
tween the two countries.
There are two contingen-
cies for this according to
Moscow. First is an end to
anti-Soviet propaganda in
the West and secondly, the
agreement between Israel
and Syria over the Golan
Heights which Israel occu-
pies. Not mentioned was
Israeli occupation of the
West Bank and Gaza Strip.
For this Russia would be
willing, besides the restora-
tion of diplomatic relations,
to increase permits for
emigration for Soviet Jews.
Possibility of thaw is based
on a Soviet change of
attitude expressed by the
Soviet Ambassador to
France, Yuli Voronostov to
the Israeli Ambassador to
France, Ovida Sofer.
The Foreign Ministry in
Jerusalem confirmed the
meeting between the two
ambassadors was held. It
would not comment any
further.
Some reports said that
Sofer said he was told by the
Soviet ambassador that the
U.S.S.R. regrets its emotio-
nal break with Israel over
the 1967 Six Days War.
In Moscow, Soviet Foreign
Ministry spokesman, Vlad-
mir B. Lomeiko said Jewish
emigration was a Soviet
domestic problem. He would
not comment on the Vorono-
stov-Sofer meeting.
Foreign Minister Yitzhak
Shamir stated: “All in all, it
was a routine meeting
between an Israeli represen-
tative and an Arab represen-
tative.”
In the past several weeks
Israel and the Soviet Union
have exchanged messages.

Jerusalem Court Convicts Jewish Terrorists
Of Crimes Against West Bank Arabs
A Jerusalem District
court Monday sentenced
three Jews, who were
convicted of terrorism, to
life in prison. Twelve others,
also convicted of terrorism
drew sentences ranging
from three to 10 years.
The entire group had been
convicted July 10 by a
three-judge panel of crimes
against Arabs living on the
West Bank. The crimes
included murder, man-
slaughter, being a member
of a terrorist organization,
maiming two Arab mayors
and also planning to destroy
the Arab shrine Dome of the
Rock on Temple Mount in
Jerusalem.
The terms of life are
mandatory under murder
convictions. Some of the
other sentences were sus-
pended and others were
reduced to seven years.
Pleas for amnesty im-
mediately cascaded upon
Israeli officials following the
sentencing. The trial, one of
Israel’s longest, ran for 13
months and saw deep
division among Israelis.
Some Israelis applauded the
Jews as heroes because they
killed Arabs to preserve law
and order. Others viewed
them as vigilantes who
deserved the full application
of the law for taking it unto
themselves, thus putting
themselves above the law.
The defendants were reli-
gious Jews who were back-
ers of West Bank settle-
ment.
