Anette Morganstern with Friends in Israel
Visiting Israel for the first time is an unforgettable experience,
especially for Annette Morganstern. As director of the Dallas
Zionist Organization of America, she was selected one of ten
Zionist professionals in the world to participate in the Faye Schenk
scholar program. During Morganstern’s four week stay with her
group of Canadians, South Africans Americans and Australians,
she deepened her conviction to Israel. She said the feeling of
sitting in Golda Meir’s chair during a study session was enough to
make her realize the miracle of Israel. When Morganstern
ascended the staircase of the original temple, she was awed that
she was standing in the same place as Solomon had three
thousand years ago. She thought then, "we’ve survived and we're
back, for good!”

BY JOSEPH POLAKOFF

WASHINGTON - The Union

their activities as a "grass roots
network” in the United States
and has grown more than six-
fold in 16 years, is examining
candidates to be its executive
director.
Marc Epstein, its director for
18 months before resigning
July 1 to return to general
political affairs, has been
temporarily replaced by Scott
Cohen, the former director of
the U.S. Senate’s Foreign

Percy (R-lll) was the
committee's chairman.
Nurit Erger, the Council’s
national program director, says
its nine-member staff at the
Washington headquarters helps
serve more than 55,000
members in councils in 38
American cities. The council
also has affiliates in Canada,
France, England and Israel.
The Union, which in the past
year as been admitted to the
Conference of Presidents of
Major American Jewish
Organizations, was sparked for
years by the late Harold Light,
president of the Bay Area
Council with offices in San
Francisco. His widow, Selma
Light, is the Bay Area group’s
honorary life president.
Cohen, who heads a
consulting firm in international
relations, has assumed the
director's post for three
months until a successor to
Epstein is named and the
organization moves to new
offices here. He has served the
council as a consultant. Cohen
said his firm has ten clients
including the Inter-Action
Council comprising 28 former
national presidents and other
heads of government whose
present chairman is Helmut
Schmidt, the former chancellor
of West Germany.
Before coming to the council,
Epstein was foreign policy
advisor to Senator Ernest
Hollings (D-SC) on his Senate
staff and issues director for his
campaign for the Democratic
presidential nomination in
1984. Prior to joining Hollings’
staff, he served in the State
Department after completing
Near Eastern studies at the
University of Munich. Born in
Portland, Ore., and a resident
of Seattle, Epstein, who is 37,
received his B.A., M.A. and
Ph.D. degrees at the University
of Washington where he also
was on its faculty for three
years. He also studied at Tel
Aviv and Chicago Universities. A
specialist in German-American
relations and U.S. policy
towards Germany, Epstein is
going to Germany for a short
stay before returning to
Washington for service at the
Capitol.
