Jewish Legion Vets
Called to Pilgrimage
relationships with the
Palestine Jewish Legion.
Palestine Jewish Legion
veterans, their relatives and
friends, have been called to
join the annual pilgrimage
and reunion to be held in
Avi-chail, Israel, during
May. Every year this group
gathers at the Soldiers
Museum (Bet Hagdudim)
located near Netanya, to
relate their experiences and
retrace their steps during
the days of World War I.
This gathering marks the
65th anniversary of the Zion
Mule Corps and observes
the 57th anniversary of the
formation of the Jewish
Legion. This was the first
identified Jewish military
unit since the days of Bar
Kochba, 1900 years ago, and
the forerunner of Palmach,
Hagannah and the present
day Israel Defense Forces.
Following the historic Bal-
four Declaration about 57
years ago, a new impetus
was given to the idealists of
Zion. The Palestine Jewish
Legion served with General
Allenby to drive the Turks
from the Holy Lane. More

Having traveled exten-
sively throughout the world,
Shimon and liana have
developed a repertoire that
includes an intoxicating
blend of foreign-flavored
songs, selections from the
modern American folk scene
and the rich heritage of
Hebrew and Yiddish music,
which is an integral part of
their experience.
Although they are not
sabras, Shimon and liana
have lived in Israel for a
number of years. Their
programs reflect a deep
understanding for and famil-
iarity with the music of that
country. Besides the various
parodies and humorous
comments that lend a light
touch to the proceedings,
“The Balladeers” give to
each number an intensity
and musical polish that is
very special.
Adds Convention Chair-
woman Edis Parkans, “I
want to remind all members
of BBW District 7 that this is
an open convention with
unrestricted chapter repre-
sentation. So if you feel like
singing, this evening will
provide the opportunity!”
