Schechter to Welcome Soviet Families
At Annual Auction March 31
At their annual auction
on March 31, Solomon
Schechter Academy will
welcome the newly-reset-
tled families of 19 children
from the Soviet Union
who have been enrolled at
the school.
In welcoming these
families, the school will
also recognize community
leaders who have played
key roles in bringing about
their exit from the Soviet
Union and arrival at
Solomon Schechter. They
include:
The MOBILIZERS of
advocacy for Soviet Jewry
in Dallas: Leo Laufer,
Cheryl Pollman, Leon
Rabin, Harvey Weiner,
Andrea Weinstein and
Mark Werbner.
The ORGANIZERS of
Jewish Family Service’s
community efforts to im-
plement the recent wave
of resettlement: Nate
Levine, Arnie Marks, Er-
nest M. Ries, Sue Sayah
and Lorraine Stevens.
The EDUCATORS of
Solomon Schechter Aca-
demy, Akiba Academy,
and The Teacher Learn-
ing Center, who brought
Jewish education to the
children: Stephanie Hirsh,
Rabbi David Leibtag,
Rabbi Jordan Parr, Eileen
Rosenblum and Zvi
Schoenburg.
The PIONEERS of
Congregation Shearith
Israel who became the first
congregation in Dallas to
resettle a family: Selwin
Belofsky, Lynn Cohn,
Karen and Ed Jerome,
Anita and Lyle Kaliser,
and Rabbi Jorday Ofseyer.
The event, to be held at
Shearith Israel, begins at
7:30 with Havdalah. It
benefits the school’s cur-
rent programs and allows
it to continue to respond
to the expanding needs of
Dallas for Jewish educa-
tion.
The theme of the even-
ing, “We Are One,” con-
veys the connectedness of
the Jewish people all over
the world. In addition to
the auction, a Hal Karp
video, written and pro-
duced for the occasion
will have its premiere that
evening. The video, which
documents the colossal
community effort involved
in bringing the new fami-
lies to Dallas, illustrates
the response of the
children to their first ex-
posure to their Jewish
heritage. It also features
many of the leaders being
recognized for their con-
tribution.
Please plan to join
Solomon Schechter Aca-
demy for this expression
of welcome, recognition,
and thanks. The cost is
$20 per person. Please
RSVP to Solomon
Schechter Academy,
18011 Hillcrest Road,
Dallas, Texas 75252.

Harvard Prof. Daniel Goldhagen
To Speak at Annual UT Dallas
Memorial Holocaust Symposium
Harvard Professor Dani-
iel Goldhagen will be the
speaker for the annual
Harry L. and Margaret K.
Sebel Memorial Holo-
caust Symposium held at
the University of Texas at
Dallas on Sunday, March
25 and Monday, March
26.
The destruction of
Europe’s Jewish com-
munity during World War
II is a tragedy many
people believe will never
be understood and cer-
tainly not forgotten. Yet
today, over 40 years later,
some scholars are ques-
tioning the severity of the
Nazi SS’s actions. This
has led to a great debate
regarding the Holocaust.
This symposium, which
supports the University’s
Arnold A. Jaffe Holo-
caust Collection, is
designed to present both
the facts and the lessons
of the Holocaust to the
public at a time when
some people deny it oc-
curred at all. Presented by
the Arnold A. Jaffee
Holocaust Collection, the
Anti-Defamation League
of B’nai B’rith and the
Dallas Memorial Center
for Holocaust Studies,
this is the second year for
the symposium.
Goldhagen is known
for his expertise on the
Holocaust. During the
two-day symposium, he
will discuss the Varieties
of Holocaust Revisionism
and Fallacies about the
Holocaust. The main focus
of his research is to under-
stand the actual perpe-
trators of the Holocaust,
their background and the
social forces that shaped
them. Through his studies,
he has discovered many
myths surrounding this
tragic event. For instance,
Goldhagen exploded the
popular belief that Nazi
SS men faced death or
severe punishment if they
refused to participate in
the murder of Jewish vic-
tims. Most recently, Gold-
hagen received acclaim
for his opposing response
to Arno Mayer’s book,
Why Did the Heavens Not
Darken? In Mayer’s ver-
sion of the Holocaust, he
states that the reason it
occurred was due to Ger-
many’s failing war with
the Soviet Union and that
more Jewish people died
at Auschwitz of natural
causes than in the gas
chambers. Goldhagen
disagrees with this view
and works hard to insure
that people do not mini-
mize or forget the tragedy.
The Harry L. and
Margaret K. Sebel Holo-
caust Symposium devel-
oped from the Arnold A.
Jaffee Holocaust Collec-
tion at the University of
Texas at Dallas. Research-
ers in political history, the
history of ideas, literature,
sociology, political science,
psychology and other
fields bring together the
lessons of the Holocaust
and using the resources
available at the University,
study the impact of anti-
Semitic bigotry in its
many guises. Because this
collection can support ad-
vanced research, its avail-
ability alone insures that
many people will study
the Holocaust who other-
wise would have had little
awareness of its tragic
dimensions in modern
history.
Federation and Jewish Family Service
To Award Scholarships to Area Students
The Jewish Federation
of Greater Dallas, in
cooperation with Jewish
Family Service, each year
awards a number of col-
lege scholarships to
students from the Dallas
area. Applications for
1990-91 school year schol-
arships must be submitted
by April 6, 1990. Deter-
mination of awards will
be prior to July, 1990.
The various scholar-
ship funds of the Federa-
tion are maintained by
The Foundation depart-
ment of the Federation.
Prospective applicants are
directed to Jewish Family
Service for the applica-
tion process. Confiden-
tiality and privacy is main-
tained for all applicants.
Both the needs and
merit of the student ap-
plicant are considered in
determining the qualifica-
tions for the scholarships
as well as the amount of
aid awarded. For the
1989-90 school year, 17
scholarships were award-
ed. Awards ranged from
$250 to $1,500.
In conjunction with the
Federation’s scholarship
program, Jewish Family
Service is the local admini-
stration for the scholar-
ship programs of the
Jewish Children’s
Regional Service of New
Orleans. Again, under
this program, students of
proven merit and need can
obtain financial assistance
for undergraduate and
graduate level college and
university attendance.
Applying students need
not designate any parti-
cular scholarship fund. A
single application to
Jewish Family Service is
all that is required. The
application review com-
mittees determine which
fund and award is ap-
plicable.
