Chabad of Plano/Collin County hires new outreach director
By Deb Sihvrthorn
Settling in to Chabad of Plano was a
snip, a snap — rather easy for Chabad of
Pianos new Outreach Director Rabbi
Yehuda Horowitz, his wife Esther, and
their children Nosson Chaim and Chaya
Mushka, as they celebrated their fir$t
weekend in Plano with a family simcha.
The community, including Hebrew
School families,congregants,and partic-
ipants in Chabad's Shofar Factory,
celebrated the upsheremsh (first haircut)
of Nosson Chaim, who turned three years
old on his first Shabbat in North Texas.
“Everyone here has been so warm and
kind and a simcha is a great way to make
an entrance," said Rabbi Horowitz.
“While we’ve only been here a short time,
it already feels like home "
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Rabbi
Horowitz has studied or worked in
London, Toronto, Italy, Hawaii and Reno,
Nev. It was the opportunity to help build
the outreach center in Reno that led
Rabbi Horowitz to his role here in Plano.
“I remember, as a child, the shluchim
(Chabad emissaries) returning to Crown
Heights to talk about their experiences
around the world. It’s beautiful to reach
out and find people who are interested in
learning," he said “It was amazing to help
build the community in Reno and it’s
very much what I look forward to here.
“Fourteen years ago, we came to
Plano to establish a congregation and to
create an outreach program for all Jews,"
said Chabad of Plano/Collin County’s
Rabbi Menachem Block.“These are both
very important areas to me and, with our
history and substantial growth, 1 felt we
needed an outreach director to assist in
both expanding our existing program-
ming, so that our current participants
have more opportunities, and to reach
out and service the needs of the ever-
growing Jewish community in Frisco
and the surrounding areas."
“Rabbi Horowitz and his wife are
almost like a third generation of
shluchim,” said Rabbi Mendel
Dubrawsky, who first brought Chabad to
North Texas almost 20 years ago. “We
invited Rabbi Block and Rivkie to the
area and they’ve continued the teaching
and the community building. It’s fasci-
nating to watch the success and how in
tune with the needs of this Jewish com-
munity the shluchim arc, and the
optimism and fine, sensitive qualities
they share speak volumes about Rabbi
Block and the growth of Collin County’s
Chabad connection."
“We interviewed many potential can-
didates and Rabbi Horowitz stood out as
a warm, eager and enthusiastic emissary
of the Rebbe who is clearly willing to be
part of our team,” said Rabbi Block. That
team also includes Rabbi Horowitz’s wife
Esther, who teaches in the Chabad
Hebrew School and leads a toddler play-
group and the community Bat Mitzvah
Club; Rabbi Block’s wife Rivkie; Rabbi
Chayim Baruch and Sarah Alevsky.
“From our first visit we were impressed
and recognized the group effort," said
Rabbi Horowitz. “The relationship that
Chabad of Plano has with its community
is a very special one "
Rabbi Horowitz, who recently hosted
many friendly faces at Stonebriar Mall’s
Barnes and Noble Bookstore to design
their own birthday cards and to lead a
reading of “The World’s Birthday” in
advance of Rosh Hashanah, looks for-
ward to other family activities, such as
the Oct. 10“Sukkah Bounce” at Pump It
Up in Frisco. In addition, Chabad’s
Jewish Learning Jnstitute (JLI) and
other classes will be held at the Collin
County Community College’s Frisco
campus and at other locations.
Since childhood, Rabbi Horowitz has
had an unusual squad of best triends,
the puppets of “Small Wonder Puppet
Theatre," founded by his parents Yaakov
and Aliza Horowitz.“My parents started
a Jewish puppet theatre and even when
I was just about 10 years old, 1 got to help
with their shows,” said Rabbi Horowitz
who counts “Uncle Pinchey,” a zayde-
like" friend with a warm old-world
accent, among his favorite pals.
“Together we’ve traveled to schools,
community centers and synagogues and
shared beautiful stories through the
voices of the puppets. Kids and adults
alike love the puppets and it’s a won-
derful way to share messages, mitzvot
and learning.”
Rabbi Horowitz and his puppet side-
kick,“Peretz the Parrot,” will make their
debut on Nov. 3 as Chabad’s “Got
Shabbat” returns. The monthly, family
Friday night services with interactive
fun, games and activities are sure to
bring the light of the Shabbat candles
into every visitor’s heart.
Beginning Nov. 4, Rabbi Horowitz will
lead Chabad of Plano’s new Learner’s
Service, for both men and women, from
11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Congregants
will, have an opportunity to learn the
prayers, discover the meaning of the
liturgy and discuss the weekly Torah
portion. After services, members are
invited to join in the congregation’s Kid-
dush.
“These enhanced services will allow
more people to participate in the service
and to learn during their davening," said
Rabbi Block.“Rabbi Horowitz’s position
is a structured one that will both expand
Rabbi Yehuda and Esther Horowitz,
and their children Chaya Mushka (left)
and Nosson Chaim, have joined the
staff of Chabad of Plano/Collin County.
Rabbi Horowitz will lead Chabad of
Plano's weekly Shabbat morning
Learning Service and the monthly "Got
Shabbat' Friday night family service,
and focus on outreach programming.
and complement our programs. It’s my
hope that many more young families will
get involved through his efforts.”
“I think that people are looking for
inspiration and meaning in their lives,”
said Rabbi Horowitz. “Chabad provides
us with the tools to meet the need.” All
that the Jews of Collin County need to do
is open the toolbox.
