ROUND TABLE
QUESTION: WWt account, for the v.riou.
^ the customs of the Sephardic Jews and those of the
Ashkenazic Jews?
ANSWER: At least three types of reasons have been advanced for
these differences. Some base the differences upon anthropological
features claiming that the Ashkenazic Jews were those who mainly
migrated from th,e northern part of Palestine through no ern
Trias. This brought about different clmtotic conditions plus other
features that were responsible for changes in appearance, ept.
A second type of reasoning attributes the differences to the con-
tention that while the Ashkeriazic Jews were derived and influ-
enced mainly from Palestinian Jewry, the Sephardic Jews were
mainly influenced from Babyltoninan Jewry. (It should be men-
tioned, however, that sometimes, contrary to the Visual pattern,
the trend was reversed.) A third form of explanation centered
around the differences in social and political conditions. The F a
co-German Ashkenazic Jews were, for example, more influencced
by the environment of their Christian neighbors than were the
Spanish Jews who reached their Golden period under Mfeslem rule.
The real difference can only be understood when considering a
particular circumstance instead of trying to give a comprehensive
formula. _________
