2 TEXAS JEWISH POST, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 7988 NEW YEAR ISSUE
JESS JAWIN
For Those Who Serve
i
t was a little after nine a.m. last Wednesday.
On the way to the TJP for a gruelling deadline line, we were
stopped suddenly by the sounds of sirens racing through the
streets.
We pulled over as the ambulances shrieked by making their
way to the airport freeway.
By the time we arrived at the office, the freeway was thun-
dering with the combination of wailing warnings followed by
their loud foghorns.
Soon the news came through: A Delta plane had crashed on
take-off. By late afternoon the number of known fatalities had
reached 11. Later in the evening it was revised to 13 with 92
known passengers to have escaped the charred remains of the
727 Jet.
Following TJP presstime and late into the evening news
names of the fatalities were released. Among them were Thelma
and Phil Vogel of Dallas.
The shock of this loss travelled like lightening through the
Metroplex Jewish community.
