NEW JEWISH ENCYCLOPEDIA
Panorama
BY DAVID SCHWARTZ
(Copyright 1964—by JTA)
There is shortly to be a new
Jewish Encylopedia, announces
Dr. Nahum Go Id man n.
The project must be close to
him for, I believe, when he was
a very young man, Dr. Gold-
tnann was associated in Berlin
with the publication of a Jew-
ish encyclopedia in German
and Hebrew.
Dictionaries and encyclopedias
are generally spoken of as re-
ference works, to be consulted
only on special occasions. There
is the story of a reader w'ho
took out the dictionary and la-
ter returned it, explaining that,
while it was a book of some
merit, it had too many short
stories to suit him.
Personally, I find both dic-
tionaries and encyclopedias very
enjoyable reading. The novelist
Erskine Caldwell said that about
the only books he reads are dic-
tionaries. Lewis Browne, author
of “Stranger than Fiction” and
other works of Jewish interest,
during his college days went
systematically through the en-
tire Jewish encyclopedia.
With an encyclopedia, it is
like having the world on your
shelf. More than the world —
a species of eternity itself. For,
in a Jewish encyclopedia, you
can go back in time to Adam
and Eve in the first love story,
back to Noah and the great
rains which came at a time
when the umbrella and galoshes
had not been invented; back to
David, the giant - killer and
statesman, to the wise Solomon,
to Isaiah, the first to conceive
of a United Nations and, after
the Biblical period, in the Jew-
ish Encyclopedia, you can trace
the wanderings of the Jews, the
rise and fall of empires, and
meet with Hillel and Akiba,
with Mairaonides and Spinoza
and Moses Mendelssohn and
Felix Mendelssohn, with that
great philosopher of joy, the
Baal Shem Tov, with Heine and
Disraeli, with Herrzl and Freud.
With the encyclopedia, they all
honor you and step into your
parlor.
The first Jewish Encyclopedia
in English was published at the
beginning of this century. Its
editor was Dr. Isidor Singer .He
was also the head of the Amos
Society. The prophet Amos
preached the brotherhood of
humanity, and Dr. Singer nurs-
ed some hope of enlisting an i
international brotherhood under
his banner. I think he also had
an idea that the Jewish Encyc-
lopedia itself might serve the
purpose of dispelling prejudice
by dispelling ignorance of Jew-
ish matters. Had not the French
Encyclopedists been mainly re-
sponsible for the broad spirit of
the French Revolution?
But the first Jewish Encyclo-
pedia is dated. History moves I
fast these days. Dr. Goldmann
himself is a case in point. He
had been eminent in the Jewish j
world for sometime, yet it was ’
his activities in the last several
years which have been most sig-
nal. He is most responsible for
obtaining the German repara- j
tions for Israel.
I like the story they told a-
bout Dr. Goldmann that, after
settling the matter of repara-
tions with Adenauer, he would |
fly to Egypt and get reparations
for the injuries Pharaoh inflict-
ed on the children of Israel by
enslaving them four thousand
years ago and, after that, he
would fly to Spain and get re-
parations for the damages done
to the Jews in their explusion
from Spain in 1492.
Perhaps also Israel might be
able to collect reparations from
America for one of the things
you will discover in any Jewish
encyclopedia — that Ferdinand
and Isabella financed several of
the expeditions to America from
funds confiscated from Jews.
