spring offensive to coincide with
the Independence Day celebra-
tions.
All units which attempted to
enter Israel were wiped out,
twelve terrorists alone being
killed in encounters on
Independence Day. If one adds
to these successes the rounding
up of a further Popular Front
ring in the West Bank, the situa-
tion in the struggle with El
Fatah and similar organisations
would appear to be well in hand.
Sight must not be lost of the
fact that the current escalation
has been created following the
very heavy pressure brought to
bear on Egypt by the Palestinian
terrorist movements and their
bid for leadership in the Arab
world. And this points to the
new and very serious develop-
ment which is taking place
throughout the Middle East, a
development which will bring
all existing Arab regimes to a
situation in which they are
obliged to fight for their very
existence.
Nasser has been driven into
this extremism in part by the
Arab terrorist movements; the
Lebanese Government of Rashid
Karame resigned on the issue of
Palestinian terrorists ; the Jor-
danian Government is in con-
stant danger from the same
source, as witness the artillery
duels forced on them in the
Jordan Valley and the recent
attack on Elath against Hussein’s
wishes; and even the Iraqi
Government has been forced to
make pronouncements on the
subject.
And while the Big Four meet
against the background of an
impending war, which is in fact
not impending, the real threat
and danger to the established
regimes in the Middle East con-
tinues to grow within the Arab
countries.
