POSTORI AL
JEWISH HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH EXCELL
American Jewry may well he proud of the young- people attend-
ing Jewish high schools.
Recently the results of the 1960 New York State Regents Scho-
larship examinations were announced. The number of seniors in
Jewish high schools earning these valuable awards in competition
with over 50.000 state high school seniors was far out of proportion
to the number of students taking the examinations.
The glowing records of three high schools run by Yeshiva
University — the High School for Boys and the High School for
Girls in Brooklyn and the High School for Boys in Manhattan —
are especially worthy of commendation in regard to their achieve-
ments in the New York State examinations.
This year a 15-year eld student in the Yeshiva University High
School for Girls in Brooklyn, Naomi Fuchs, scored highest among
ihe state’s girls. A 17-year old student in the Yeshiva University
High School for Boys in Brooklyn, Mitchell Wolf, achieved the
third highest score in the state. A student in the Yeshiva University
High School for Boys in Manhattan, Mark Steiner, scored third
highest in the Bronx, N. Y. And in all 53 seniors in the three schools
won scholarships while 34 more were listed as alternates.
Three years ago, Mark Press, of the Yeshiva University High
School for Boys in Brooklyn, ranked first in the state in these
same scholarships. All these young people are equally at home in
the study of the Talmud and digital computers.
This record is, of course, no accident. It is rather the result of
fine academic training for fine young minds in an atmosphere of
scholarship and religion. The combination of the two in the double
program of Jewish Studies and normal secondary-school subject
matter each year produces some of the most outstanding young
students in America. Moreover, it dispels the popular notion that
the dual education is hard on our youth.
We congratulate all young scholars and wish them well.

The new 16-inch oil pipeline from
Elath to Beersheba, an outstanding
example of how new horizons for
Israel’s economy are being opened
up with the aid of State of Israel
Bonds, will be completed in Au-
gust. In this photo, Finance Mini-
ster Levi Eshkol (left) is shown
inspecting the installation of the
pipeline in the Negev. The new line, *
built with the help of Israel Bond |
funds, will ultimately have a capac-
ity of 2,900,000 tons per year. It '
will connect with the existing pipe- i
line from Beersheba to Haifa, and
will eventually supply enough oil
to meet domestic requirements and
provide a surplus for export.
