Talmudic scholar Rabbi
Adin Steinsaltz was a
March 15th guest at Akiba
Academy. After davening
Shaharit with the Middle
School students, Head-
master Robert Scott intro-
duced the distinguished
rabbi and said meeting him
was an opportunity of a
lifetime. Rabbi Steinsaltz
traveled to Dallas to be
part of the Thanksgiving
Square Interfaith Celebra-
tion and to visit the Dallas
Jewish community. Rabbi
Steinsaltz has written ex-
tensive commentary on the
Talmud and his goal is to
make Talmud accessible to
everyone.
During his visit with
Akiba students, he ex-
plained that what they are
learning now will finally
become relevant as they
become adults and then
they will use all their
knowledge. He stressed
that they should remember
they are Jewish and that it
is a title of nobility. Rab-
bi Steinsaltz emphasized
that we must behave in
ways fitting nobility and
that we are "Children of
God" so our actions should
reflect that honor and bring
honor to God “We are
held to a higher standard of
behavior than other people
and should act according-
ly." he said.
Akiba hosted the Jew-
ish Communal Workers
Professional Group where
Rabbi Steinsaltz conducted
a study session on Psalm
50. His visit to the Jewish
community was coordi-
nated by Gordon Fuller,
Director of the Education
Department of the Greater
Dallas Jewish Federation.

For many, entering a
nursing home means the
end of traditional holiday
celebrations. Not so at
Golden Acres where all
Jewish holidays are ob-
served and celebrated. This
was the 45th year that
Golden Acres held its first
and second night Seder
dinners at the Dallas Home
for Jewish Aged on the
Campus. The staff worked
diligently and did a tre-
mendous job organizing
the event. Residents, their
families, friends and Gold-
en Acres staff attended the
large but intimate gather-
ing.
Nathan Kaplan, the
Home's Chaplain, con-
ducted the first night and
Dr. Marshall Lindner. Ex-
ecutive Vice President, led
the second Seder. The
residents, family members
and members of the Board
of Directors also partici-
pated in reading from the
Haggadah.
The original Golden
Acres Haggadah was cre-
ated by the residents of the
Home in 1957 and was
revised in 1987, 1991 and
1996 to meet the changing
needs of the resident
family. A long-standing
Golden Acres tradition that
was started by the late
Fannie Gold, a resident of
the Home for 39 years was
continued at the Seders. At
the end of the Haggadah
everyone sings God Bless
America, a wonderful trib-
ute to Fannie Gold's mem-
ory.
Tanya Stracener, Mar-
keting and P R Director
at the Golden Acres
Campus tells the TJP that
it was a good deal last year
when Tom Thumb invited
the Dallas Home for
Jewish Aged to become a
partner in its Good Neigh-
bor Program. Tom Thumb
donates a percentage of
their members’ total gro-
cery purchases back to the
Home! There is no paper-
work involved.
All you have to do is
stop by ai\y Tom Thumb,
fill out a Reward Card
application and pick up
your Reward Card. Simply
give the cashier your
Reward Card and the
Home's number 1236.
Your personal Reward
Card will be linked with
The Dallas Home for
Jewish Aged. Every time
you shop, use your
Reward Card and the
purchase price of your
groceries will automatic-
ally be recorded to the
Home’s Good Neighbor
account. Tom Thumb will
keep a running total of the
purchase and will send a
percentage back to DHJA
as a donation. You can
also link your card to more
than one group and the
total will be divided.
If you wish to change
an organization you are
