Yom Hashoah 1999 to Focus on Children
Commemoration at Shearith Israel, Apr. 13
“Children and the Holo-
caust: Then and Now” will
be the theme of this year’s
Dallas Jewish community
observance of Yom Hasho-
ah. Holocaust Remem-
brance Day The commem-
oration will be held at
7:30 p.m on Tuesday,
April 13th, at Shearith
Israel Synagogue, 9401
Douglas.
The centerpiece of the
program will be a dramatic
reading presented by
teenagers from area Jewish
schools and youth groups.
A community youth choir
under the direction of
Cantor Don Croll will
sing several songs in-
cluding “The Last Butter-
fly,” a song based on the
poem by Pavel Freedman,
written while he was
incarcerated in the Theres-
ienstadt concentration
camp.
Dallas' annual observ-
ance of this special date on
the Jewish calendar always
includes a silent proces-
sion of local Holocaust
Survivors. As the years go
by and the number of
survivors diminishes, the
importance of the enure
Jewish community re-
membering the Holocaust
is brought home.
Rabbi William Gershon
of Shearith Israel will
introduce the ceremony and
Rabbi Peter Berg of
Temple Emanu-EI will
lead the congregation in a
special reading. Cantor
Yitzchak Zhrebkcr of
Shearith Israel will sing
the Song of the Partisans.
Cantor Max Wider will
chant K'EI Mateh Rac-
hamim and Rabbi Yitz-
chak Cohen of Tiferet
Israel will offer a closing
prayer followed by the
Star Spangled Banner.
The youth choir will lead
the congregation in
Hatik\ah\
As has been the tradi-
tion for the past several
years, six large Memorial
candles will be lit by
children and grandchildren
of Holocaust Survivors in
memory of the 6,000,000
Jews who perished during
the Holocaust. This year, a
seventh candle will be
added for the non-Jews
who also suffered and died
at the hands of the Nazis.
It will be kindled by Judge
John Marshall of the 14th
District Court in Dallas.
As people enter the
sanctuary, teenagers from
the B’nai B’rith Youth
Organization will be
reading names of Jews
who died in the Holocaust,
including relatives of
Dallas Holocaust Survi-
vors. and special lists of
children who lost their
lives. This project, "Unto
Every Person There is a
Name," has been conducted
by BBYO for the past
several years.
A unique addition to
this year’s observance is a
special pre program for
Jewish children in grades
three through eight.. The
production of the chil-
dren’s opera, Brundibar.
first performed in Theres-
lenstadt. is the story of a
brother and sister who
must find a way to get
milk for their ill mother.
They collaborate with the
children of a nearby town
to outsmart the organ
grinder named Brundibar
who tries to foil their
plans.
Brundibar. first per-
formed by Jewish children
who were imprisoned at
Thcresienstadt, was staged
in 1943 in a camped attic
theatre to an audience of
prisoners, camp leaders,
and Swedish Red Cross
workers. The following
year, most of the children
were transported to the gas
chambers of Auschwitz.
In April 1998, the
Bevil Community Theatre
of Hamilton, Alabama,
mounted the first ever
American production of
Brundibar. The actors are
children from five Ala-
bama counties. Appropr-
iate for grades 3 through 8,
the 40-minute performance
is preceded by an intro-
duction and followed by a
question and answer ses-
sion with the actors. The
total time is about an
hour.
Br unde bar will be per-
formed at 6:30 p.m. in
Kaplan Auditorium of
Shearith Israel Synagogue.
The annual Yom Ha-
shoah minyan will be
held at the Holocaust
Center. 7900 Northaven,
on Sunday morning. April
llth, followed by break-
fast. At (his Shacharit
Service. Survivors, Second
Generation and other mem-
bers of the community
will join in saying Kad-
dish for the 6,000.000
Jews who perished in the
Holocaust. Rabbi Yitzchak
Cohen will offer a d’var
Torah and dedicate the
memorial stones that have
been installed over the past
year.
The Dallas Jewish com-
munity observance of
Yom Hashoah is spon-
sored by the Dallas
Memorial Center for Holo-
caust studies, the Jewish
Community Center of
Dallas and the Rabbinical
Association of Greater
Dallas.
