Cervantes, Marshall win big at Jr. Classic; brave heat

Sports Writer
Bastrop’s Christy Cervantes
and Lewis Marshall were two of
six winners in their respective
divisions to take home individual
honors at the fifth annual Lost
Pines Junior Classic golf tourna-
ment held yesterday at the Lost
Pines golf course in Bastrop State
Park.
Cervantes won the 15-18 girls’
division by eight strokes with a
7-over-par 79 while Lewis Mar-
shall won the boys’ 12-14 division
in a sudden-death playoff. Mar-
shall finished with a 8-over-par 80
on the day.
In all, thirty-seven golfers brav-
ed the unpleasant heat and
humidity to make up the field for
the annual event including twen-
ty , from ~ Bastrop.
After having 51 participants in
1990, the Junior Classic had its
lowest turnout with only 35 golfers
participating. Though only a bit
higher than last year, head golf
pro Kevin Adare seemed pleased
with the field for this year’s
competition.
“We can’t get as many good
players as we’re used to,” said
Adare. “With a lot of the top tour-
naments going on it is hard to at-
tract a lot of kids to come out.”
With the Pan American Classic
just finishing up play this past
Friday at Jimmy Clay Golf
Course in Austin, many of the
potential golfers decided not to
show up and opted instead to
prepare for such tournaments as
the Texas Optimists Qualifying
Tournament held at Northern
Hills Golf Course next week.
All Golfers that qualify in the
tournament can advance to the
Optimist Junior World Golf Tbur-
nament in San Diego.v

Winners of the Junior Classic at Lost Pines Tuesday smiled despite the heat.
In the past two years, Bastrop
has sent two golfers, Jerrwood
Marshall in 1990 and Christy Cer-
vantes last year.
Tuesday at Lost Pines, com-
petition was fierce throughout the
six age divisions for both boys and
girls and received considerable
praise from a distinguished
former head golf pro at Lost
Pines.
“The program has been good
for Bastrop,” said Rudy
Belmares, now the head golf pro
at the Mission del Lago golf
course in San Antonio. “The tour-
nament as a whole has gotten bet-
ter and the course is looking good.
Kevin (Adare) is doing a great
job and I’m really proud.”
Belmares added.
Tuesday the six division tourna-
ment drew participants from La
Grange, Taylor, Columbus,
Austin, Thorndale and Houston.
The young golfers were divided
into the 12 and under group, a
12-14 age group and a 15-18 year-
old age group. The younger
golfers played nine holes while
the older groups played 18 holes.

24 golfers vie for cup
Twenty-four area golfers vied
for honors Saturday in the Elgin
Literacy Council second annual
golf tournament, held at the Lost
Pines Golf Course in Bastrop
State Park.
According to Lost Pines Golf
Professional Kevin Adare, the
tournament raised approximate-
ly $850 for the Literacy Council.
“They did a lot better this year
than they did last year,” he said.
The contest was a two-man
best-ball format and featured two
flights consisting of six teams
each.
In the championship flight Bob-
by Woehl and Steve G' ann com-
bined for a 15 under par 57 to take
first place.
The teams of Bob Kincheloe
and Oscar Campbell and Pete
Lovett and Don Lee both shot 65
for a tie of second place
Adare said he set the tie-
breaker as going backwards from
the 18th hole to see who shot the
best hole to determine who would
be awarded second and third.
Kincheloe and Campbell won
second by virtue of a better score
on the 18th hole.
In the first flight, Allen
Beckham and Paul Tuttrup com-
bined fora field leading 56, to take
first place.
Kay Rogers and Tbrnmy Clair-
borne shot a 60 for second place
and G.M. Blackman and Hub Pat-
ton shot a 64 for third place.
Individual awards were given
to Louis Cruz who came within a
foot of the pin at the number three
hole to take the “closest to hole”
honors and the “longest drive”
honor was given to Bob
Kencheloe.
“I don’t know how far he hit it,”
said Adare, “but they say he real-
ly nailed it."
