Problems with Straight
Party Voting
As voters, Texans have the
option to vote a straight pa
ballot. Only 17
allow this, the others have
abandoned it as an out of
date and unnecessary relic of
times when only paper ballots
used. As an election of-
ficial who has counted paper
ballots in the past and contin-
ues to count the paper mail-in
ballots used by our county I
never was a fan of the straight
party ballot. It added confu-
sion to the counting process.
Some of the questions that
would come up were:
Do we count the straight
party ballots separate from
the others then add them in?
Do we go through the ballot
and mark each candidate in
every race?
Do we count the empha-
sis votes, where the voter
marked both the straight par-
t American
Do YOU have the compassion and

their lives? To also be a strength and
comfort to those family members who
are enduring the reality of a loss of a
loved one? Would you PLEASE consider
the challenge of being a AMERICAN

hours of their need?

ty ballot and the individual
races?
If there are other votes on
the ballot for another party
or even the same party do we
count them?
Thankfully, we now have
electronic scan paper ballots
and the machine will sort it
out for us. Ideally the ma-
chine will count the vote as
the voter intended.
But our electronic voting
machines don’t work the
same as paper ballots. When
you mark a straight party
ticket, the machine will mark
all the races with that party’s
candidates. But, it doesn’t
mark anyone for the races
that don’t have party affilia-
tions or any propositions that
may be on the ballot. If voter
tries to vote an emphasis
vote, then they would actu-
ally be clearing the box next
to the candidate they wanted
to select.
So if you want to your bal-
lot to reflect your intentions,
skip the straight party selec-
tion. And take the time to
vote every race. It’s our right
and responsibility as Ameri-
cans.
