edge of the thicket. we then sprang to the Door when we
found two more which we tied fast. Pancoast then taken the
Candle and went in a other room and looking under the bed
found one of the most sevage looking Devils that I ever saw
which he soon brought out with several guns which he found
under an adjoining Bed. the Govenor seeing him allowed that
he was a great villain and said that 'he would not be afraid
to trust that man, so calling the Inturpeter to him said tell
that fellow that if he would show him where the Colonel was
that he would give him fifty Dollars and set him at Liberty as
soon as he got Back to Jalapa so the Villain told us that
the Colonel Captain and two Lieutenants was in a certain House
and that he new the very room that they slept in so marching
on in silence till we got within about 1/2 mile of the House.
the guide told us that going down the Hill the Horses would
make a great deal of noys and give the alarm so we dismounted
and taking thirty five men and leaving the Ballance to take
charge of the horses we proceeded down the hill and in an
Instant had the House surrounded. they was one sentnel at
the Door which we knocked down before he had time to shoot
although he tried. his gun anaped we struck a light and
fownd them all in Bed. we got the Colonel Captain and 2
Lieut & six Prisoners and killed one. we got them all mounted
and arrived back in Tolope about sun down the next day we took
the men just at 5 o Clock.
We got back to camp very tired sleepy and Hungry but much en-
joyed at our enterprise. I do not know what will be done with
the [prison]ers, the whole town appears to be perfectly sur-
prised and say that the Colonel is the smartest Mexican leader
that they Have. his name is Co [Colonel?] Michel he is a
noble looking fellow and had 2000 men under him at a time.
Dear Wife I should like to see you and the children very much
but which pleasure I can not enjoy as yet but you must try to
along without me for a few months longer. the time will soon19
