Committee
to be
selected
With Halloween approaching,
Burleson School Thjstces may be
a little hesitant about disregard-
ing superstitions involving black
cats, broken mirrors, spilled salt,
or walking under ladders-
particularly career ladders.
Neither cat, morror, nor salt is
expected to enter the discussion,
but selecting a career ladder
committee is one of the items on
the October agenda of the school
board, which meets Monday eve-
ning at 7:30 in the Board Room
of the BISD Administration
Building, 1160 S.W. Wilshire.
And, like trouble and twins and
ears, career ladder items seem to
come in pairs. The board will
also be designating appraisers
for certified personnel. The
evaluation of these appraisers is
an important part of the career
ladder process.
Last year uncertainties and in-
congruities in the career ladder
system made it a major demoral-
izing influence among Texas
teachers statewide.
BUT THIS IS A new school
year and one of the duties of the
new committee will be to make
an attempt to clarify a few areas
of confusion thai may have
resulted last year. The committee
will be comprised of an elemen-
tary administrator, a secondary
administrator, the administrator
in charge of personnel, and two
teachers to be selected by the
three administrators from nomi-
nations made by the Com-
munications Committee.
"Since everyone is more
familiar with the process, the
striter criteria adopted by BISD,
and the existence of numerical
scores for the 1984-85 ap-
praisals, the work of the commit-
tee in preparing a recommenda-
tion should be much less time
consuming (this year)," said Su-
perintendent of Schools Gor-
don Cockerham.
Statutes require that there be a
minimum of two appraisals with
a minimum of four observations
by two appraisers for career lad-
der purposes. Principals, assis-
tant principals, administrative
interns, and program directors
and supervisors are all certified
to make appraisals.
THE BOARD WILL also hear
from the administrative staff on
its preliminary plans for facilitat-
ing the development of a dis-
cipline management plan for
students. The tentative schedule
is to have the plan finalized and
adopted by the board at its
January meeting and submitted
to the Texas Education Agency
for its approval by Feb. 1,
1986.
Other items on tonight’s
agenda include:
— Nomination of candidates to
serve on the Board of Directors
of the Johnson County Tax Ap-
praisal District.
— Ratification of a contract for
the millwork to be furnished for
the consntruction of Jack Taylor
Elementary School.
—Consider approval of an
agreement to support the legal
defense of the case of Leeper et
al v. Arlington ISD et al. The law-
suit could clarify the question of
home schooling.

Understanding is important

able to understand the abuser, but
it’s important that we do,” he
added. A batterer has typically
received much rejection from his
childhood; he indulges in heavy
pornography; and generally made
a poor sexual adjustment in his
early teen years.
"Whatever you don’t talk out—
you act out,” he said, emphasizing
the importance of understanding
the person who batters and why he
i does it, so that he, in turn, can un-
derstand himself and start revers-
ing the pattern. "The wives often
perpetuate the situation without
knowing it. They set themselves
into a trap by becoming the ‘criti-
cal parent' or a submissive wife.”
Glen Griffin, another local coun-
selor, often works with the
youngsters of the shelter, too, in
managing their fears and anger.
Ann Collins, an attorney with
West Texas Legal Aid will be in
Burleson Friday, Oct. 18, offering
free legal advice regarding divorce,
protective orders, family violence,
and chij^l custody. “This is an oui-
reach project for abused women
through the shelters," said Adams,
and if the interest is strong enough
it may be set up on a monthly or
bi-monthly basis." Collins will be
here at 1 p.m., but a location has
not been determined yet. If interes-
ted in the legal services, call 295-
9322.
