Elks hand Bowie 22nd loss 54-45
BY STEWART APPLIN
The Burleson High boys
basketball team’s propensi
ty to do better on the road
than at home this season was
borne out again Tuesday
night
The Elks beat Bowie 54-45
at the Elk Pit, only the se-
cond home victory in eight
games, to snap a four-game
losing streak. But the
triumph was not nearly as
good as the 63-36 thrashing of
the Volunteers in Arlington
on Dec. 21.
"I thought we were slug-
gish," Coach Shawn Scanlan
said after the game, "but I
guess a win is a win.” The
first-year coach said that his
club needed a win and that
the less-than-intense perfor-
mance probably won’t hap-
pen again. "We never could
get things rolling tonight We
never could get untracked."
Bowie Coach Eddie Fitz-
hugh leaned against the
wall next to his team's
locker room after the con-
test, visibly upset. His team
lost its 22nd game without a
win during the 1982-83 cam-
paign and dropped to 0-12 in
District 7-5A. “I really felt
we didn’t play as well as we
should have. We definitely
have improved over the last
few weeks, but tonight we
regressed."
The Elks improved their
record to 4-8 in district and
10-14 overall; they are 8 8 on
the road and 2-6 in home con-
tests Four of the losses in
Burleson were by four points
or less
THE SMALL group of
Burleson fans at the game
who may have been expect-
ing a blow-out after the
27-point triumph over Bowie
on the road must have been
shocked as the visitors surg
ed to an 8-0 lead to start the
game The Elks missed their
first four field goal attempts
before Jim Bill Myres con-
nected from 16 feet to put
Burleson's first points on the
board with 4:53 left in the
first quarter
The Black and Red rallied
a /'hf Burleson's Kob Stewart (45) lies on the floor in agony after hitting a basket in the
AffOny \/J third quarter and getting called on an offensive foul. Others pictured are Mark
d\fp • VI Vann (54). Pat Wadlington (20), Jim Williams (12). Jeff Roth (SO), and Jeff Moore

as the Elks won for the second time at home. 54-45 over the visiting Volunteers.

Mark Vann midway through
the second stanza but the
pesky Vols came back to tie
the score at 18-18 on a three-
